They use 2 different sizes in India and the 2 different adapters I had did not fit. I ended up buying a conversion adaptor in India for under £2 which did the job plus the build quality was surprisingly exceptional!

There are in fact 2 main types of sockets in use in continental Europe. Both have 2 pins, but one also has a built in earth pin protruding out of the socket.
With earth pin: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/280x200q90/540/paRA5F.jpg
Without earth pin: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/280x200q90/661/fqajhw.jpg

Most plugs can be used with both sockets, though the earth pin can stop some plugs from fitting in the socket. As a result, most plugs have a hole to ground the plug and allow the plug to fit in the socket, like shown here: http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/280x200q90/633/Oq177O.jpg

Most hotels in India have Universal Plugs fitted in them, however they do use an old British standard with 3 round Pins (same as South Africa??)

I remember reading up on old British plugs on Wikipedia, though I never knew they were still used in countries like India. Thanks a lot for the info Northerdave.
