Buy the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 EX DC OS Lens for £299, get a free Sigma EF-610 DG ST flashgun (worth about £80) & a 3 year warranty - by redemption

Cracking lens, used it on my Canon 600D a few times when I had a loan of it, didn't want to put the kit lens back on after using this.

Amazon is cheaper but isn't eligible for the free flashgun or extended warranty

Amazon seem to have the same lens for £276.23 (sold by Amazon, not a third party from what I can tell). Can't comment on it being grey market or not though.

Thanks op

Why would anyone pay three ton for this over a standard Nikon lens?

Equivalent Nikon with constant aperture is over £900 on Amazon.
So if you mean over the kit lens, then this deal has a better aperture range, fixed f2.8 as opposed to f3.5-5.6.

I never had issues with focus on the FZ72 on either the wide or tele end, I did however question the resolution vs noise, the photosites are just too small on such a tiny sensor. Even my very old 6MP Nikon D50 takes cleaner images. The FZ200 is a much better camera, the resolution is much more fitting for a small sensor and the fast bright lens captures more light.

I have the FZ72 and although it's a nice camera I regret not having saved for the FZ200 or a compact system camera. I do really like the wide angle lens, but I like to take macro photos and shots of sunset, sky and clouds; it's poor macro performance and excessive lens flare are a disappointment. The 60x end of the zoom is only for macro photos on very bright days (butterflies on flowers and such) or when using a tripod; forget about shots of wildlife unless they're in full sun and then take a LOT of shots and hope one is in focus ;-)

Not having used Mather's before I'd have bought the FZ72 from Amazon - it's currently the same price and their returns policy on cameras is great - I returned two used cameras over Christmas with no hassles at all. The FZ200 is about £2 more from Amazon.

It's better. The camera's better and the lens is far better than anything you'll get on an NEX for under £600.

It's best not to mate earth based cameras with alien technology as it might trigger a new series of the X-Files. Then again ....

That's far cheaper than the X-E2 which I would just not be interested in that that price, especially as an import. For those who are familiar with both, I would be really interested to know if this would be much better than the X-M1 with the 16-50mm lens. Thanks.

The XM-1 has the same sensor but no viewfinder. The 16-50 is a fairly capable lens but the 18-55 is great. It's F2.8 instead of F3.5 as well and much better build quality.

The new firmware on the xe-1 transforms focus time etc.

Remembered - as Darius commented - I was thinking of the Tamron which does get a better write up (on pentax anyway)

I prefer the Tamron 17-50mm F/2.8

The kit lens being the 18-55mm with variable aperture (from f3.5 to f5.5) right? I was comparing a pro lens earlier - the Nikon Nikkor f2.8 17-55mm.I've not been conscious of AF speed issues while I have had this sigma. so that must mean it performs. I guess if you have a kit lens, AF performance may be better (quicker or more accurate or both) on sigma by comparison, if only because it has a much larger aperture to begin with. I.e. despite the aperture that will be used to take the picture, the focusing part your camera does just before the shutter release is done at f2.8 - so lots more light for your cameras focusing system to work with.In terms of noise, at the same apertures as the kit lens, it should be the same, no? But if you can take pictures at wider apertures like f2.8 which the kit lens wont let you do - noise performance can be much improved if you are taking pictures in reduced lighting, like inside a building.

Thanks for that mate, much appreciated.
It sounds like an excellent lens for the money.

It has enough strengths that I've pretty much replaced my Nikon 17-55mm f2.8 with this Sigma 17-50mm f2.8, yes thats right, replaced the Nikkor 17-55mm DX with this Nikon-fit Sigma 17-50 on my camera.
