1TB Western Digital Elements deal for £65 a couple of days back didn't factor in postage, which was £5, taking the total upto £70, so for a mere £5 extra this is also a stunner of a deal.

Nice one

EDIT:

I assume its only the bigger ones? Just to make sure, what about the smaller 2.5" Iomega 320gb ones that were going for around £40 @ Tesco - are they effected as well?

Seagate released a firmware fix for the affected drives a few days back.I upgraded the imogea(seagate 1TB) no problem. It nows reads firmware SD1B instead of the iffy SD15 firmware

Did not realise this had one of the seagates in it, even if there was a fix it's hassle worth avoiding.

There is a 2 year guarantee with this and I beleive that the firmware on the drive is updateable and has been updated from ealier versions.

Link if possible please?

I got the Western Digital My Book for £63 delivered from Comet last week

surely you are better off with a couple of smaller drives instead of one enormous one in case of failure?

Before you get all hot under the collar, find the model and serial number using the various utilities recommended and enter them at seagate.custkb.com/sea…931

I bought my Maxtor Basics external a month ago from Amazon and it is reported as NOT requiring an upgrade. I used the Everest utility to determine the details.

Aslo nothing can see the seagate drive in these maxtors, took me ages to get a program to find out what drive was in it, none of seagates stuff works, in the end I used Everest Ultimate Edition. Even the guy at seagate when I did a live chat was like you're not supposed to know it has one of those drives in it, software can't normally see through the external hardware.

You need to install it in your PC to update, easy to do but you need a sata motherboard

Well I could do it, but then I'd loose my warranty, so I'm not doing it. … Well I could do it, but then I'd loose my warranty, so I'm not doing it. Cheers anyway.

But having the dodgy firmware means your HD could lock up at any time and you would loose all your data, is the case easy to open , it is on the Iomegas which i updated

Seems like a good deal. slightly off topic, does Anyone know if the Maxtor One Touch 4 1TB external drive has a 32MB Cache? Different sites seem to say different things.

I received my 1TB Iomega Prestige from Tesco yesterday.

I removed the drive from the enclosure to check the type of drive.

The drive model I have is one of the models affected by this firmware problem. (ST31000333AS) :x

However ..........

I used the Seagate site to check the serial number.

Seagate confirmed my particular drive is unaffected by the problem. :w00t:
