I picked one of these up on the way home, plugged it in and thought I'd better format it... Its been formatting for 2 1/2 hours now!!
Maybe this is normal?

Use quick format. Also every Maxtor HD I owned (4) has died on me within a year.

I know that now
But its a bit late as its already formatting, lol

this is a great buy, great bargain.

The 16meg cache is great and it is virtually silent

highly recommended

I think this is pretty standard price for the 320gb external drives these days?

Maxter are the Tesco Value of hard drives. They have the worst reliability out of all the hard drive manufactures.

Also dont do quick format, that does not format. Its like having a dirty wall and instead of painting over it in a few coats to make it pure white. It only does one coat. So you can see some of the dirt coming through as its still there so when you paint your art on the wall. Can cause problems as a pure clean wall will show your art better.

Do a full format so that it does the job properly.

That is not true at all.

The only difference between a quick format and a standard one is that the disk is scanned for bad sectors in a standard format.

The actual format is exactly the same.

If you wont take my word for it, take Microsofts:

support.microsoft.com/kb/…686

It is a very common misconception that a format erases files. It does not, any decent PC techie will easily be able to recover files from a formatted hard disk. To properly erase a disk (paint the wall) you need special erasing software.
