I was one of the lucky ones and bought 2 for £19.99 each at TESCO about 6 months ago... granted, I haven't seen them at anything like that price since, but £50 sounds not that cheap.

few threads on here have slated maxtor drives anyone heard of any bad things about these i wouldnt want to lose all my data

also i currently have a 250gb and need more so hence why i am looking would i be better paying the extra £20 and getting a 1TB?

I've had the Maxtor Basic 500 in use on a daily basis for the last three years. No problems so far. You should not rely on any HD for backup. It's better to back up onto verified DVDs (and if your data is very important, make at least two copies)..
