What do you want from an external HDD? Size and low price... it has both :P

It does what it says on the box

How does this compare to the Western Digital Passport drives? I had one of those and loved it, but figured I'd never, ever use it so sold it - within 3 days I had to format my hard drive lol, so I figure it might be a good idea to pick up another drive ^_^

I haven't personally bought it, just saw it on the CDiscount store, and posted it... I don't really know what there is to compare with external HDDs.. the connections, disc speed, and Cache I guess...

recieved mine within 2 days of ordering. after mixed reviews i thought give it ago as the review in PC PRO MAGAZINE gave it 5 out of 5. Now i am new to this, but all im trying to do right now is to transfer all of my music and pictures etc from my portable hard drive (wd passport 160gb) & Laptop memory to the Maxtor. took around 12 + for around 300gb to shift to the hard drive! and just checking now that sum error message is coming up!

Cheers Inferno, I was thinking in terms of size and that, and can you just connect this up to the USB, or does it need an external power lead?

ALL external 3.5" drives require external power (this is one of them).

Only the 2.5" external drives can run off USB alone.

Uses an external power lead. It had a two pin plug with an adaptor to allow it to be used in a standard socket. I have had this for 6 months now and no probs since it was last posted here for £70 there abouts. The hard drive also goes into sleep mode when its not being used which saves the hard disc I think. Remember that you can now buy 1tb drives for about £75 now, good price tho.

Ahh, thank you guys - think I['ll wait for another 2.5" drive then, even though this one looks great and is a bargain

There was a 1tb drive on hotdeal 3 days ago, which was £60 from tesco direct, it was a great deal.

This has a 16mb cache compared with 8mb which is the standard with most other cheaper external drives, and it's not £55.99, It's £57.98 after the voucher (delivery is £1.99). I ordered one yesterday after deciding between this or a Seagate Freeagent 750GB from Amazon @ £59.99 (but that only had 8MB cache)

good spot

bad company

heres one review:

Having read the reviews, i reluctantly decided to give cdiscount a chance, as the three payment option was perfect for me. I have to say i wasnt hopeful from the start, but you can only hope your experience isnt the same as the bad ones you read about!
I ordered a 42in LG plasma tv on 14/2/09 to be told 3-5 working days for delivery.
By 17/2/09 i decided to call and see how my order was progressing as i had expected it to at least be ready to dispatch by then. I was told, the order hadnt been dispatched as it was on "back order" I explained i wasnt happy at all, that i had been quoted 3-5 days for an item that clearly wasnt available at all, at the time of oder.
I was then told my order would be ready for dispatch by 20/02/09 and i would recieve it early week begining 23rd. I called this morning to check it was ready for dispatch, to be told "sorry but this item is delayed and will not now be available until 2/3/09.
How many more delays would there be before i was actually in receipt of this tv?? I have cancelled the order, to be told it can take 30 days for a refund of the money i have already paid, however, im now worried i may not actually get my money back at all, if this is how they conduct their business!! If they do not have the products to ship, they shouldnt be taking peoples money!!!!!!!
As an update, i have since been told that despite cancelling the order, they will still be taking the further two payments from my card when they are due under the 3 payments option. I am furious to say the least. So to add insult to injury, not only have I paid the first payment, I havent got the TV, will not be getting the TV but they are still charging me for it. I have been told that for each payment they take, it will take up to 30 days for a refund. ABSOLUTELY APPALLING WAY TO TREAT CUSOMERS!!!!! IF I WERE YOU, DO NOT TOUCH CDISCOUNT WITH A BARGEPOLE!!!

Completly unrelated buy.... I think it's strange how the sellers pictures of the external HD are always made to make it look like its huge...

Apparently the company's french. Would some people have a problem with that:p

Can it be switched off on the unit?

No it cannot be switched off, however it can be set to go into 'standy-by mode when not in use.
