Mayflower Southern (KFC) style gravy mix, makes 1.6L 99p @ Home Bargains

Never seen this before so thought I'd take a punt, am glad I did!

Very similar to the KFC gravy, but also wouldn't be out of place on a Sunday chicken dinner or on chips.

Very thick too, unlike Bisto and similar which I always find a bit watery.

Good for you to. 100G powder is 3.5 Syns for Slimming World. This is easily enough for 4 x people. As you say similar to KFC gravy, very nice.

Also I have found these in Farm Foods for anyone with one of them near you. Not seen Mayflower gravy in B&M although they stock the Mayflower curry sauce.

lovely with a roast chicken especially if you use some of the juices from the tin really is like proper KFC gravy if made that way
Yep, in B&M also but more expensive at £1, Home Bargains all the way.

It is lovely but I think its 3½ sins for a 100g of gravy including the water, not 100g of powder. It's just under 15 syns for 100g of powder.
I've never understood slimming world. 3.5 syns for a bit of gravy, yet you can eat 100kg of pasta if you like and that's fine even though it's a carb. Makes no sense at all.

Yeah you're right, it's 100g made up but the syn checker can be confusing so I can see why some people think it's for 100g of powder.

When I first joined I wasn't convinced by this either but 6 months in and I've lost 5 stone and I'm nearly at target. The way they work out their syns is strange but sometimes it's to do with how filling something is.

The club works but the people give up. You do not have to be in a slimming club to lose weight though. You can still eat KFC when slimming

Your right, my apologies. Made up as directed to 100g is 3.5 Syns. Just checked Syns Online.

I saw a documentary on how they make the gravy, it sounds gross but it's not really. Basically they scrape the fat buildups from their empty fryers, whizz it all up with (presume water) hen add it back to the mix.
The wife bought some last month to give it a try.

It's the b@llocks!
I been having this lately and love it!... I fry some chicken peas onions carrots mushrooms makes a nice casserole.
Plenty of exercise and eat most food in moderation, lots of fruit and veg wherever possible...you shouldn't need a slimming club for that.
They do a nice "Extra Hot" curry mix too, same price.

What the bloody hell are you talking about.
very similar to KFC gravy but without the sh*t they filter out of the fryers mixed into it, you mean?
I bought this last week, for anyone who's interested, it's suitable for vegetarians. I've not tried it yet,I get the feeling it best to be done in pan.... Looks like the Maysan? Curry powders you get in tubs you mix with water.

I think anyone who had the frame able to lose 5 stone in weight, definitely need(s/ed) a slimming club.

Or a Gastric Band. X)

I've struggled with my weight for years, despite swimming for an hour every weekday. Due to health issues I'm on steroid injections, and am only allowed 2 pieces of fruit a day. After years of not losing I joined slimming world in Feb and last night got my 2 stone loss award, so for some people it is obviously a help. I think the main help for me is the support I now get (the NHS offered me no help, despite constantly asking to see a dietitian etc) Also, being weighed every week by someone else gives me a bit more motivation. It cost me a fiver a week, but I gave up smoking the day I joined saving me £9 a day. You are right, good eating and excercise should be enough for most people, but if a group helps, then why not. Important thing is it's not a diet as such, more a healthy eating plan.

The syn system does seem weird but it seems to work, I think it's partly based on fat content and not calories, how much you're likely to eat, and as MimiMissMoo says, how much something fills you up.

Bisto do a chip shop gravy which actually does taste kind of like chip shop gravy and is insanely thick. Add some chicken juice to it and I think you'll be on the way towards KFC gravy - though in truth I've never really rated KFC gravy. You can buy the Bisto Chip Shop stuff in Poundland.

I've been looking at this in Home Bargains for a few weeks but I didn't think it would be much different to the aforementioned Bisto, and my food cupboard is already overflowing!

I try and make my own gravy whenever I have any meat juice - such as when I cook a joint or when I do one of those roast-in-the-bag chickens. I have an old recipe that never fails -

To meat juices from pan add:

Water,
Stock cube,
LOADS of black pepper
A big glug of gravy browning,

Mix a heaped tablespoon of cornflower to half a small glass of whole milk

Add to gravy and cook off until you have the desired consistency. Add water if necessary. The milk addition sounds weird but it adds some depth to the gravy. There's usually loads of gravy here so I tend to bung the leftover gravy in the base for my chillis or curries.

It's delicious. Truly...definitely not healthy though.

NICE
bought this a month or so back when it came out. not very nice at all. so incredibly salty. since southern fried as a flavour is mostly black pepper ,it was definitely not peppery. it's like they picked up the salt instead of the pepper to season it.

Agree 100% it's not a diet but a life change more so. I eat loads with Slimming World. It's made food more enjoyable and I feel SO much more better. Whatever works for you in my opinion is what's best, for some this is Slimming World, others it is not. Also congratulations on the 2 stone award, I also got my 2 stone cert last night as well! Keep it up

Slimming World

First rule about slimming world....
just salt and fat and no meat, well hardly any!
Tastes too much like standard chicken gravy to me. Nothing comes anywhere close to KFC gravy, I don't know what it is but I don't think anyone can imitate it.
Wifey used this instead of Bisto, the results were amazing.

Different gravy......

You know with bisto you can just make it with a bit less water?? Doesn't have to be watery

KFC gravy come in two forms though....i have a very small take away KFC … KFC gravy come in two forms though....i have a very small take away KFC in my local village and im 100% sure they make their gravy from a pre made mix, its always exactly the same taste/consistency every time, its silky smooth and has a slight mixed herb tastebut the big drive through restaurant in a near by town makes their own from the fat left over from frying the chicken, and its much better!if i gave you a gravy from each store you'd agree with me

All stores are supposed to use a 50/50 mix of crackling from the bottom of the fryer and the pre mix, obviously crackling only goes so far so if you run out you use the pre mix on its own. Some smaller stores may not make much crackling but it's rubbish without it.

Yer but the point is you need loads of it to make e.g. half a cup of thick gravy. With this you don't.

But fat content is calories, 1g of fat is 9 calories.
