Better safe then sorry. What do you loose if its free now.

While phones do sandbox apps, a virus does not necessarily need root/admin to do damage, witness the recent PC one that encrypted files on local / network that relied only on the user's normal credentials. A "rogue" app could do the same to your phone's pictures/documents/etc., or could leak your credentials or could use services that cost you money, etc.

If determined to get root, it could use the same techniques/vulnerabilities that rooting apps give you root to obtain root just for itself and do more.

One issue is that virus checkers themselves don't have root/admin privileges thus are somewhat limited in what they can block. So whether they would be capable in stopping various attacks is open to debate I think...

that's one disadvantage for having android devices....need an antivirus...

I've read reviews of virus software draining battery and slowing your phone down, that's why I wouldn't install this if it's not necessary.

Do you mean 'need a third-party antivirus', as opposed to AV s/w which might be pre-installed on iOS or Windows Phone devices? I think all mobile/non-mobile devices need some form of anti-virus, so I think it's just a question of how one obtains this software.

I read the other day that 80% of all new viruses were aimed at android so you certainly need something

So much utter nonsense being spouted in the comments here.

There are over 10 free antivirus software available and some of these rank as the best such as TrustGo/360 mobile security aswell as Avast/AVG/Comodo which everyone knows offer free antivuris on windows. Begs the question, why pay?
My current antivirus is still one of the best but would love to know which is the least power intensive with no compromise to security.

According to above, its TrustGo. Off to download

Have a virus on your device instead of this software. Trust me you will be better of.

All these virus protectors on your phone etc are a waste of battery life.

Voted hot by accident, McAfee are bad, just use the most popular and best detection rate antivirus for android and PC, Avast

better off

Yeah, even for free its hard to say this is hot. May as well install any random battery draining app from the play store and you will get the same effect / protection.

An alternative take on security is to monitor what your apps are doing. I tried this last week play.google.com/sto…ent It's pretty new and still in "public preview" but I think it shows promise. The app itself doesn't show you a lot of detail (a risk score and an overview of where your internet traffic is going) but if you make an account and log in on the computer it gives you a lot of detail (maybe a bit much for non technical people)

Interesting as it's not a complete comparison. This does not help in any way make an informed decision.

no software is virus proof.....be it WP, IOS, Android, Palm or something.....
any code can be tampered by someone with some coding experience....

the only thing left is to be able to activate the microphone as and when they want to transmit.....
these apps and smartphones are just invasion of privacy....
they gather so much of data and by analyzing that data they know more about you than your partner or anyone else....

How else would you expect it to scan your phone?

@thread: If you know not to download anything from dodgy sources and keep an eye out for official apps having any security leaks you won't need any protection. Common Sense 2014 is the best you can find and it's free.

It pays to have an ounce of common sense.

Given the aggro I had getting rid of McAfee off my daughter's network I'd steer well clear of this.
McAfee itself is malware, it's reputation is so bad they're having to rebrand it!!

Apple devices don't get viruses. Rubbish android.

agree, many third party apps need permission to access your full (not basic) networks settings which ring alarm bells and also i understand if a app needs to delete/modify usb storage but why read usb storage. There are soo many apps i used like a youtube video downloader, okay they need some access to your networks, edit/ remove usb storage but they dont need access to identify calls and read contacts, read usb storage, use camera (view pictures). And if you read many of these apps privacy statements you will see that it says they can use your personal information to sell or to advertise.

People are becoming careless with their privacy data and they will act like nothing happened when they get marketing/spam phone calls to their house. I have a smartphone but no third party apps, and once im done with this no more smart phones. Back to basics.
