Welcome to HUKD sjfgraham

I agree that you need some kind of protection and McAfee is good - but it SLOWS down your computer terribly. I have AVG which is free and works very well.

What free (decent) firewall would you use - one that doesn't slow down your pc too much!

Although free ,I wouldn't use a package like this from any company .An all in one packages like this will grind your PC down in terms of speed . All you need is a separate anti-virus program , a separate Firewall , and two of the best free spyware programs about ..........Spybot & Ad-Aware . Free anti-virus programs , your limited but AVG v7.5 is good and will auto update , the active Virus Shield that was supplied by AOL [sorry ,not available now] ,the Free firewalls are Zone-Alarm & Comodo amongst many others ,my vote is Comodo , I use it and it's very good .

Just use Windows firewall, you gotta be an idiot to pick up spyware/virus these days.

I disagree. Wildows firewall is a very basic level of security on XP, slightly more improved on Vista. Windows firewall will not block spyware, viruses, or other malware as it is aimed at blocking hacker attacks. A decent antivirus, better firewall, and antispyware software combination is more recommended, and even then regular spyware scans should be carried out.

Recent evidence suggests otherwise, because the bad people now hijack legitimate web pages to instal malware, and the windows firewall is better than nothing but not as good as some of the other options.

If you want freeware AVG or AVira antivirus and comodo firewall make a good combination, with superantispyware and adaware 2007 - visit www.download.com and check out the editors and or user ratings.

McAfee unfortunately never that highly rated

I understand what you mean. Port blocking outgoing is always a benefit in case something injects via the browser but if you're a little savvy then you'll be using Firefox with noscript and various other addins to protect from sites injecting arbitrary code onto your system. There's simple steps you can take without having to have another system process running and taking a 3% CPU footprint and 50MB memory stamp. I have AV installed but not with auto protect on just there so I can scan suspect files at random.
