I was on the Medion UK website and came across the following deal for Medion Akoya E1311 Netbook - the technical details are listed below from the website and I've included the direct links for the black & white netbooks that are available.

Edit - Netbook cost is £209.99p including VAT and shipping is an additional £4.99p, bringing the total to £214.98p. Thanks to Deanos for confirming the shipping cost.

Edit 2 - Here's a CPU comparison link provided by Popoyaya, which shows the Sempron 210U CPU scoring 390 against the Intel Atom N270 CPU, whichs scores 304 - cpubenchmark.net/low…tml

Edit 3 - Verbally confirmed with Medion Technical Support, that this netbook can only handle a maximum of 2GB of RAM being installed into the single DIMM slot present on the motherboard; unfortunately the advisor could not confirm the specific model other than it being a DDR2 DIMM and it was 800MHz. Was also advised that the battery runtime for the netbook is between 2.5 to 3.5 hours dependent upon the power configuration settings you have in place i.e. the screen brightness settings, etc.

Edit 4 - Verbally confirmed with Medion Technical Support that there is device driver support that you can download for this netbook; if you check out the following post link you'll see the information on how to do this along with model numbers you can use, to download 32 and 64 Bit device drivers for Windows XP, Vista and 7.

hotukdeals.com/ite…=93

Edit 5 - Thanks to help from B0ingball, he's confirmed that the next model up (Medion Akoya E1312 Netbook) uses the following type of memory, so it should be the same as the one used in this deal.

"Memory is a Samsung PC2-6400 (400Mhz - 800Mhz effective) M4 70T2864QZ3-CF7 DDR2 SODIMM
clocks 6-6-6-18-24 (at 400Mhz - 800Mhz effective)"

Edit 6 - As confirmed also by B0ingball, there is an issue with GPU scaling through the integrated ATI graphics card whilst running the Windows 7 OS - listed below is a solution that he found, which addresses this.

Solution for the GPU Scaling Problem with the ATI x1250 under Windows 7 Operating System

Edit 7 - Thanks to Hajj_3 for this information, as he's received his netbook through already.

That's a good price for a netbook with a faster AMD CPU plus HDMI output, just add a broadcom MPEG4 HD decoder card. ;-)

Heat added! Great price and specification.

Standout features - decent chipset for a budget laptop, 6 cell battery, high resolution screen (fine for 720p), HDMI and 801.11b/g/n WiFi. The unknown is processor performance and battery life (the processor alone has a TDP of 15w). Still it looks great!

Thanks for that I'm having a dig around just now to see if I can find anymore information on any possible CPU comparisons done with it.

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

i believe this processor is much more powerful than the standard Atom 1.6ghz N270 procs

The AMD CPU is easily faster for single thread applications, only when it comes to multi-tasking the Atom edges it due to the Intel Hyperthreading feature.

Edit: I think the AMD processor may also support 64-bit operating systems, the Atom doesn't (only the desktop Atom variant does).

This is a great price btw as a bridge for someone who wants more processing power than a netbook but dont want a big laptop

tomshardware have done a comparison between performance of Atom and Sempron:

Probably not the exact same processor, but gives you an idea.

Thanks for that - I've found the following video for the E1312 netbook model from Medion, which has the same chassis as the E1311. From what I can see it's easy enough to crack it open (similar process the MSI Wind and the Medion Akoya E1210) to upgrade the memory, the hard disk & other components.

Just had a quick look but that sempron in the test is a socket 754 cpu which is a desktop proc.

Dont think we can derive much from that test. :-(

Edit: Sorry they are all desktop procs

Does anyone know if it has a DVD drive?

Does anyone know if it has a DVD drive?

It won't come with an internal one due to it being a netbook but you can easily purchase an external DVD drive for it - alternatively if your trying to install software onto it you can either download it off of the internet, have it copied over to a USB memory stick or take it from an external USB hard disk.

What about the graphics chip on this? How does it compare with ION?

medion are a pretty crap brand (or should i say, the rebadged brand that medion use) , you wait, i`ll give it 6 to 12 months of normal use and screws will be falling out of it.

that being said!

for the price, the specs are very good for this machine, and the processor should be way better than the atom`s.

i`ll vote hot, but dont forget to tight all visible screws up in a few months time

Me too, does anyone have any idea if this would run the PC version of Snow Leopard?

Need Mac OS but cant be paying Mac prices

I have heard mixed stories but I have a Medion Akoya E1210 and it's been fine for me - I have running with Ubuntu (for a client project) and it's been a good performer.

Thankfully I haven't had to tighten the screws up, except when I had to crack it open to upgrade the memory and the hard disk! ;-)

Cheers, Scotty Boy!

according to this benchmark the Intel Atom N270 scores 304 whilst the Sempron 210U scores 390, so significantly better.

It is that size for the screen resolution - remember it's a 11.6" Netbook with a higher capacity graphics card when compared to the older 10" Netbook on the go.

Here's the graphics comparison results as well, when comparing the graphics card in this netbook against the HP Mini 311, which has NVIDA ION graphics card.

This is cracking for the price.

I would have bought one but for the graphics card! So very nearly a perfect machine.

I need one for colleage work and business I do.

Looks gd may get this.
