Bad points: processor is ancient, 900p screen, says it is not led so am guessing it will go through the battery quicker than you might think for a 9 cell, 32bit Vista....

Would avoid really even though it is cheap price wise, but for a reason.

Good price for the spec.

Only downer is Vista...Eeugh!

Though not a real problem for some

Vista

not 16:9 widescreen if matters to anyone.
ie movie playback on screen.
not bad general machine

I think you're being a bit harsh Twe.

As previously sold by Sanisburys - some happy punters here reviews.sainsburys.co.uk/267…htm

Negatives ALL relate to Vista [understandably] Stick W7 on it and it will be a great machine for most folks.

Sold for £499 then! sainsburys.co.uk/sol…701

Well said Faythur. I notice twe knocks it but doesn't suggest a better 17" bluray laptop for £319 or less.

medion laptops are crap, posting from one. gets really hot too quickly and randomly turns itself off all the time.

Not a very large sample to dis the brand. I had a Tosh that did that. Was fluff blocking the cooling, put a hoover on the inlets for a few minutes and was clear after.

Its not about finding something cheaper to beat the deal, I would rather spend a bit more and get something more decent. It's like buying a cheap tv with worse picture quality than something a bit more expensive, down the line you will normally always regret that decision.
I know I had on my past laptop.

Oh yeh I haven't voted hot or cold as it probably is one of the cheapest with a blu-ray drive but I don't see it as a hot deal due to the rest of the spec....
Edited by: "twe" 11th May 2011

My guess is this will only read Bluray and not write?

Bluray - tick
Laptop - tick
17in screen - tick
Crap - tick

I still voted hot though - it's cheap !

I would pay £400 for this if it had atleast a dual core processor, better screen resolution AND windows XP

My old medion laptop from 5 yres ago is still a still going strong and still seems zippy - just the battery that doesnt last long. But maybe I was lucky. Replaced with netbook and ipad, but still fire it up when I have the need for a disk drive.

Completely agree!! Medions are some of the worst laptops I have ever come across in my entire life!! good spec for the price but they really are poorly made. I worked in Pc World during my college years and they had a few and they really were poor but sucked people in with the price.

likewise, I have a 6+ year old medion which is great on the mains although the battery is no longer working

Voted hot for price alone!

How can you criticise the specs at this price?

To all the knockers - where else can you find a new 17" laptop with a dedicated g/x card at this price? Put up or....

I assume it comes with warranty. If you're bothered about anything goin wrong down the line then pay to extend the warranty! Simples!

I think you will find find the T3400 is a Dual Core processor
Lots of people have copies of win7 with 2 licences, I have.
Win7 Software4students £38.49
Xp4peanuts : Linux4nowt
or just manage with vista and appreciate the cheap price tag.

Or use ubuntu if you are squeamish about vista

Not a bad laptop at all, especially if all you want is brand spanking new with a future proof 17" screen.

brilly

I think you'll find 900x1600 is widescreen 16:9, just my personal experience though.

The longevity is hindered mainly by using ancient DDR2 ram which is a sure sign it will not be expandable past 4Gb, which might be an issue for some users if they can persevere with Vista until Windows 8 is released. Vista ain't that bad- it is to Win7 what Win2k was to XP except current Windows' have become fashionably obese.

I'd go for human interface features over processing power in almost every situation.

BTW: if you want to sell on that blu-ray drive there is market for one, right here

That said the graphics card is rather old and inefficient, the same vintage as the T3400 CPU. You can find cheaper 2nd hand in the paper. This is by no means future proof, they should have stopped making these well before Windows 7 was released. Wonder what they were doing with them all this time?

I don't think Medion make any circuit boards, like bigger players such as HP or even Dell might. They rebadged the MSI Wind U135 which was outstanding, OEM rebrand of U135{wikipedia}.

As a brand they convey no intrinsic quality, it might as well be labelled "Aldi".

graphics card isn't up to the standards of your beloved ati 5450 in your 'high spec gaming machine' thats for sure
... but then as its better than intel HD graphics i am sure its up to general tasks that the machine is aimed at, just my personal experience though.

its seems that you like to take a little tidbit of a fact/buzzword/'big words' etc (perhaps read 2 mins before) and couple it with some nonsense to make it look better, just my personal experience though.

It's overheating.....sort the fan out.
Download Speedfan and monitor the temp to confirm it is the temp.

almico.com/sfd…php look for the section that begins "The latest version is SpeedFan 4.43" and click on the blue bit - if you run vista make sure to use the Run as Administrator option when you run it.

Good value. It would be a great bargain if it was Win 7

heat it up man it IS nice price for this thing

not bad though. if higher than 768 or 800 lines (so you dont have to keep scrolling down when surfing net) than I'm happy with it.

guys, this laptop is really old, this is the older series cpu and gpu, vista and draft-wirelessn. This cpu would be at 100% cpu usage playing a bluray assuming the gpu can't do hd decoding.

Remember bluray drives are only £45 ish for laptops and you could sell the dvdrw in new laptops for £15+ so only £30 to add a bluray drive to a new laptop.

If you really want this then dont forget TCB at another 4% off the price or Quidco takes 3% off

The processor and graphics on this are great. It shouldn't have any problem playing Oblivion, Fallout 3, etc. It might not playing the *absolute* newest games very well but at this price you really shouldn't expect it to.

It's a bit big and heavy for me personally, but that's just my preference. This should be a lot hotter than it is.

Are you sure you have quoted me enough there

I hate to be the one that says it but, this laptop is worse than I thought, 15.5" screen here with 1900x1080p. 17" needs min 1600x900.

So I misread one figure and you post all that bloat.

5470, and "high spec gaming machine" has to be taken in the context of a £400 i3, 17" 1600x900. Well, I played GTA3 on 1600x900 with nary a glitch on it last night. It is a high spec machine, and it can play games. What more did you want for your £400 notes? The moon on a stick?
_______________________________________________________________________________
Widescreen isn't important to me, IMHO (coined so don't bother quoting that), most stuff is square, running GIMP the image is always clipped above and below with 1600, 1440 wouldn't seem that bad.

Sorry to sink to your level, but I couldn't resist..

It seems you take one mis-reading of a figure (which I read very fast) and jump on all my previous misdemeanors right back to when I once wore brown shoes with black trousers.

im not going to reply to your crap above or even read it particularly.
if you dont want someone to post a sarcastic reply to you then dont post a condescending and sarcastic 'correction'.
had you replied normally about the resolution then perhaps a different post would have been written.

You get what you pay for, some have said this laptop isnt future proof, which ones are? banging extra ram in and a bigger drive ect may speed up a lappy but wont encode that video file any faster. To others moaning about the cpu and gfx, this is a daily use home laptop, you dont buy 17" if your on the move. So what will it be good at, office - no probs, surfing the web - easy, watching bluray either onboard or output to tv - its what it wwas designed for. Will it be good for multi tasking - 2/3 low to medium apps like office, email and youtube running together - yup. If you want o game - older will run, newer no. Ultimately at this price point if you want a web friendly laptop with large screen and the option to watch movies this is all you need. Do not be put of by medion up coming companies like these have excellant customer support as they fight to make a name. No doubt medion will be like acer/msi/toshiba in 5 years. Voted hot from me

Sure, but had you 'reminded' me why it was not widescreen I wouldn't have jumped in with (albeit incorrect) specifics. Your lack thereof suggested a less well-informed member might have appreciated the elaboration, clearly I was mistaken.

I don't think lack of 16:9 pixel ratio means the screen had necessarily use square pixels and hence break the 16:9 widescreen ratio. But thank you for your comments, I should have headed the bit "if it matters to anyone", I don't think it does, although you were keen to pick me up on it.

Now now zapho and brilly, care to take this outside?

Definetly HOT @ this price. No question

had 2 broken screens too, plus 5 chargers from medion. The charger tip getting so hot melted the plastic inside.. the laptop i've got is still a good spec, but battery lasts an hour off charge so its more like a desktop as its constantly plugged in.
