extremely lightweight at 1.9kg?

my ordinary 14" laptop from 2011 with dedicated GPU weights 2.1kg.

specs page says Windows 7 Home Premium (64 Bit)

EliTom

It's alright for the casual user and word document writer. Stick a cheap ssd and your flying! Cpu isn't going to be some heavy crunching mutitasker but it's suffice.

At least ASDA will take it back when it's broken (did take mine back after only 1 week use)

Clear your internet cache and reopen the site also try other browsers. This has happened before with asda site, that the money off offer does not show everytime.

some more details apparently medion now is chinese owned
Medion Slimline MD98148 14ins Laptop - Intel Pentium - 750GB Hard Drive

It runs on an Intel Pentium 987 processor clocked at 1.5GHz, has 4GB of DDR3 RAM, a 750GB hard drive, a 14in LED-backlit display with a 1,366 x 768 resolution, HDMI port, Dolby Home Theater v4, two speakers, Bluetooth 4.0, one USB 3.0 and two USB 2.0 ports, a webcam, a DVD rewriter, Wi-Fi, a card reader and Windows 7 Home Premium.

Medion, which is now owned by Chinese PC manufacturer Lenovo, is a popular brand with almost all major UK supermarkets. Incidentally, Lenovo has already told ITProPortal (at IFA) about its short-term plans for the brand.

The German subsidiary will help Lenovo cement its position as an important player in the EMEA region, especially in the mature but still vital consumer market. That said, it will face some tough competition from the likes of Acer (from which Lenovo’s current European head honcho hails), a resurgent Toshiba, Asus and Dell.

Agreed. The laptop actually looks like an old Vaio that I sold on eBay recently. It's still a good deal for the price, but the pic makes it look like you're getting an Ultrabook-type device and it certainly isn't that.

Cant be bad for the price but I really wouldnt expect much beyond browsing and wordprocessing.

2% Quidco as well?

hmmm... USB 3.0, HDMI out, massive hard drive.... seems like a good price to upgrade from my SCH Trade laptop. As long as it can play videos, that's enough

What's the catch? Any ideas on how the screen is? The keyboard?

Its not too far off being a lowend ultrabook actualy, its certainly thin enough. But it will probably struggle with YouTube hd. Considering the cheapest ultra book is at least another £200 the median is very hot.

Depends what you need, for something for browsing at home the HP is a good deal if you have the cash and the time to deal with the cashback.

This deal is more portable and will probably have more battery life (real world).

Again it depends what you need.

People ran Photoshop and databases on more modest equipment a few years back. No reason why this should cope with anything you throw at it as long as you are not expecting blistering performance.

Doesn't matter, you can install classic shell and you can make it look like XP, Vista or Windows 7.

classicshell.net/

Or here's something novel, he could just try it vanilla and see if he can actually use it, you have classic shell to fall back on if he doesn't like the new interface changes.
