well i tried this the other week for a couple of nights before i fall asleep and the longest i managed to count was 10!

not because i fall asleep after counting 10 but because i got bored after counting 10 and had to think of something else rather than count my breathing!

It can take weeks/months to learn to quiten the mind enough to meditate. Shows how fast your brain is overworking that you cant get past 10.

i have an attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). it hasn't been diagnosed medically as i have never been to the doctor since it hasn't affected me adversely. however, i have it alright as i can't concentrate on anything for long and get bored very easily and get distracted. my mind is racing from one topic to another and even when i am asleep, my brain is still working and thinking.

meditation would be difficult for me as even if i can keep still for more than 5 minutes, my brain would struggle to shut down for that long. i found that i couldn't count beyond 10 before i felt restricted and uncomfortable and had to leave it and think of something else. as i was counting my breathing, i felt breathing becoming more difficult as i was paying attention to it.
