Found 14th Jun 2014
•Canary Island Date Palm is easy to grow and looks great all year round.
•Latin Name: Phoenix Canariensis.
•RHS Award of Garden Merit.
•Plant in moist but well drained soil.
•Prefers sunny areas. Keep well watered throughout the growing season.
•Grows up to 1500cm tall⁄long and 120cm across. Will grow and flower year after year

This palm can also be grown in a large pot so could be moved over winter if (like me) you don't happen to live in a tropical area!

Thanks, just what I'm looking for.

I hope they've got some left at my local store!

Were other palm trees on offer?

Once I get a few coconuts off it, it will pay for itself. Hot.

Just be aware that it can have an impact on your home insurance.

They also have this one half price at £25: http://www.homebase.co.uk/en/homebaseuk/garden/architectural-plants/miniature-date-palm-23cm-064452.
You could always try to reserving one online in case they run out.

If you after unusual palms try ebay or mypaalmshoponline.com. Big retailers just have the same three types.

I had 3 of these and they died due to a cold winter.

I'm sorry what did you mean??

Reserved one to pick up in Chelmsford. Said they had 2. They have just rang me, they have none!

Has anyone got one of these yet? I'm wondering how big 'medium' is, is the picture an accurate size? (just asking because it's a long way to go to my nearest Homebase for a look)

Kate I think you'd like a large one as most women do!

mine died on me couple of years ago it was huge :'(

purchased one of these 3 years ago had it in a pot for 2 years let it get big then spring this year ive put it in the ground

put foam on the soil in winter frosts and with extreme frost tie up the palm leaves and wrap them and you will be ok

Just bought one. Appox 60cm tall. Looks good for a tenner! Some great plant deals on at aldi too!

I have just been to get one and I thought they looked a bit disappointing even for a tenner. Quite sparce, not very big and not very green. The £25 ones reduced from £50 were full and lovely so got one of those instead. I was advised it will need a fleece wrap in winter. About half a dozen of both left in Gateshead but they are in separate areas if anybody is looking.

I bought two last year and put them in two huge pots. unfortunately they have died. Was gutted. They simply can't tolerate frost. They were two big ti bring inside. I'm not a gardening expert but I'm not sure what I could have done .

Also got a call to say they weren't in stock after reserving, so went up there and got the larger one for £25, it's about 120cm and as a mini variety only grows to 2m. Nice plant for the price. Label says they need protection below 5°c.

There is something weird about their stock numbering system, I had already got there when I was told they tried to contact me as there were none in stick, I found the 3 I had preordered by just looking but there have the wrong stock number on!!! Also when they scanned them got two for £13.33!!

Just picked up the two that I reserved - they're lovely, and I also couldn't resist the larger £25 one while I was there (reduced from £50) - my garden will be looking like the med!

i went for one today but didnt buy as i was disappointed with size. There where big ones at £25 but didnt want to spend that much

Bought mine last year and made a water feature with it.

Picked two from Arnold Nottm.
They were still labeled as £20 (18cm) took them to check out and they were £10.
These were quite big in size.

Went to Canterbury b&q last night and their palms have been reduced (marked down and scanning) from £3 (small) to £7 (medium) bought quite a few

as others have said - get a cold winter, and these will bite the dust - unless you are in a very mild part of the UK (e.g. Cornwall / Jersey, etc). Had several of these of various sizes die in winter - even with wrapping.

Palm Centre in London had a full size one - about 1m trunk width, and about 5-6m high - and that is no longer with us following that cold winter (was it 08?)

Butia Capitata is slightly hardier feather palm, and personally I had more success with. More expensive/rare - but much nicer looking in my view.
