Someone posted a great deal yesterday for a compact digital safe from Screwfix. It was a bit small for what I needed. Thanks to the posting from psmith1958 I found this larger one with almost double the capacity for only a fiver more!

Was £47.99 now £19.99 (save £28 or 58%)

- 16.3Ltr Capacity
- 2 x 16mm Dia. Locking Bolts
- Digit Code Length

One of the reviews says it can be opened by banging on the top. I could use one but think I'll pass on this.

Can I use the same potato to open it as the smaller one, or do I need a bigger potato?

Bought one yesterday for £19.99 return it today after reading the bad reviews about this safe

I'm guessing the other smaller one that people have been giving heat to is just as useless?

I have never used a hotel safe because they are not exactly secure. But more secure than leaving your things in the open. To be honest I would just use this and hide it somewhere where it would be hard to find. It's like people who put their alarm keypad near the door. Why would you ever do something like that!

I would test that before you believe the one review. I think if you bang the top of it with a sledge hammer a few times you may get it to open. But it might attract some attention. Someone would have to find it first too.

I have now tested this opening theory by banging on the top of it because I don't want to spend money on something that doesn't do what it claims it's supposed to do. It didn't open. I can only guess that the reviewer must have been unlucky and got a dodgy one.

So tired atm on a night shift I thought I saw dishwasher safe in title

Behind a picture. A burglar would never find it.

Can be opened with a bang on top. Look on youtube, this is common with sub £60 safes

u can't open with a bang on the top unless u got superpowers he or she talking crap I got one ane they work fine theve got 2 steel rods that go through them when locked. for 20 pounds awesome buy even if u just keep it in a place where you would think of looking mine is under the sink loli keep my passport and keys to my car if u got diamonds and gold ect obviously get a better safe but its a hot from me as I tried banging it and I just hurt my hand lol dont listen wot everyone puts on here try for urself.

i have this yale safe thesafeshop.co.uk/pro…tml
it's supposed to have silver sold secure award but i've found i can break into the safe in 20 secs if it's not bolted/fixed to the wall or floor,
you just shake the safe, a metal pin from the locking mech will come loose then the motorised locking bolts will slide freely .

Pointless unless you fix it securely so that it can't be moved, and even then it shrieks 'steal me'.

If you're just going to leave it unfixed, any thief will just take it with him. You might as well use a shoe box - at least it's less likely to draw attention!

I have 2 of these safes and have used them for several years now. On seeing the video yesterday for the smaller safe I went and tried it myself first with a small hammer and then with a tin of beans ( ). As the video shows, you do not have to hit it very hard and both safes opened, very disappointed, but at least I now know and will be looking for a more secure unit.

I get it can probably be cracked, but isn't the idea that you stick it away in the bottom of a wardrobe and stick your passports in it, rather than keep the family diamonds in it. Bit of protection against thieves and fire, I don't think you're supposed to put it on display.

Are you needing ideas on where to find them when you put on your burglary outfit?

These are handy for storing non-valuables like keys, passports, birth certificates etc. ideally to stop the kids posting them in the bin or deciding to do a little bit of Crayola modifications.

Also to prevent the banging, install it under a shelf with other surrounds.

Heat from me, mounted to a wall/floor and in the correct place this is an absolute bargain.
If you're going to leave it out on display and not secure it then you may as well save your money and buy a shoebox

Who still hides their money under mattress lol.

As the saying goes, buy cheap - buy twice....so bought both sizes yesterday :O)
Unpacked smaller one and banged rapidly on top (whilst turning handle) with hand.
Both going back this weekend - not even going to bother trying larger one (same design).

Note: if people keep/use one do bolt it down as there is also a 'reset' switch inside (rear of door) that can easily be triggered via a piece of wire through the rear mouting hole.

Lessons learned: Don't leave valuables in hotel-room safe!

What do you guys really expect for a £20 safe? It's hardly going to be bombproof.

That said, you're still better off spending £20 on miscellaneous items that you can hide your passport / money / cards / keys in without drawing attention to it.

Err.. Do what I did and embed in the chimney wall so that it cannot be hit or poked from behind.

Works perfectly. If you own a Jewellery business, then buy the appropriate security, for home use, hidden away these are perfectly fine.

Great idea. Just don't try an toilet train a new dog or potty train a toddler in the same house.
No mater what room and how in accessible, someone will pee on it

These are just a novelty. Would make an amusing biscuit tin though...

To be honest a stronger spring on the locking pin would prevent one of the issues and having removable plating over the mounting holes would prevent the other all at minimal cost so I cant see why the manufacturer doesn't address these security issues.

Thermal drill is your best option to open this along with 3 other accomplices.

Does it matter?

Thief walks in.

Thief picks up the safe.

Thief walks out with it.

So its a double blind, you leave it empty all but for a tracker ergo valuables are safe but thief lair is found.

What goods a safe when you can just pick it up & walk off? lol

Or just get one of those dummy electrical sockets? No one will look for it let alone find it. Surely that's better. Either that or get both. Leave the safe empty and they will steal that be too late when they find out it's empty. Lol.

Not just this, get a sewing pin and theres holes in the bottom, and can put it through there and reset the safe
