[MEGATHREAD] The best External HDD deals for Black Friday, all in one post

84
Found 26th Nov 2015
This post contains the absolute best HDD prices for Black Friday across all brands and all retailers. What this post is, is a list of the best deals you can actually buy. This post will not contain store-specific offers that most people can't get their hands on.

If this post works as intended, it should take the pain out of tracking down the best deals. If your Xbox One is buckling under the strain of Star Wars Battlefront or Fallout 4 and installing one more game is finally going to tip it over the edge, hopefully this post will help you out.

I've chopped the drives up into 3 categories; 1) The cheapest possible option (good for Xbox One / drag and drop / sticking the drive in a basic NAS), 2) Drives that are compatible with PS4 3) Drives with added features (auto backup, PC & Mac hot-swap etc etc).

The drives are in capacity order, and only the absolute lowest price for that capacity is listed. In brackets you'll find the retailer and the code to paste into their website's search box to find the deal.

I will update this post as things inevitably change / new deals appear / products run out of stock etc...

- There was a WD 5TB @ £89 at Currys, but it's now out of stock.
- ASDA have Seagate 500GB @ £29, WD 1TB @ £22, Seagate 1TB @ £24 but those deals have proven to be store-specific, not nationwide.
- WD Passport doesn't have any deals for Black Friday. Prices are still £49 for a 1TB and £69 for a 2TB.
- Added lower priced 1TB HDD for PS4.
- Added reference to 200GB OneDrive storage which is included with all Seagate Backup Plus drives.

Good Effort! Thank you very much
Top effort making this!
heat for effort alone!
The tesco 2gb portable link isn't working - can you check it please?
You would put a cheapest drive possible in a NAS system? Erm...... AND you consider PS4 drives higher quality than you would put in an xbox one?

That is very backwards logic even if said NAS was mirrored and striped. (RAID 10)

WD reds are nas/raid level, thats higher than i would put in even my main desktop let alone a console. (although i do run WD reds though my nas and main desktop and SSD for boot/OS....)

Could you please explain your reasoning behind your opinion (and it is opinion, your not even closely following logic here.)
I'm not here to fuss, but you are misleading people with an opinion unless you have some information i'm apparently missing.

My thought and action exactly!
Good effort. I popped the 2TB drive (when it was £53 from Argos Ebay) in my PS4 last weekend and although I needed a stanley knife to get the casing open it was a very simple process... although I did panic a bit when the blade went right inside the casing at one point.
Heat for pure effort on this!
Nice effort! Will you be listing for internal HDD list too? You did it before i remember.

WD red is best for NAS.
Fantastic effort. keep it up
Needs a thread like this for the best ssd internals

Fair challenge. To your point on NAS drives, I have seen plenty of times where people on this site have cracked open external drives to use them in a NAS, that was my reason for mentioning it.

That said, you are absolutely 100% correct. The most appropriate drive to use in a NAS is one that is specifically designed for that purpose; a perfect example is either WD Red 4TB @ £124.98 or Seagate NAS 4TB @ £109.98. It was certainly not my intention to mislead anyone!

As for PS4, you need to replace the internal drive, rather than use an external like you do with Xbox One. It's well documented that cracking open an external drive is generally the better value way to upgrade PS4, but only some drives are compatible. Some of the drives used in externals don't have the correct SATA connection, and some are physically too big. The Toshiba 2TB external @ £49 is a 15mm drive, so no good for PS4. That's why I've listed the Seagate Expansion instead (which is a Samsung M9T inside), as this drive is 9.5mm and works perfectly.

FYI - I've just updated the 1TB option for PS4 as I've found a cheaper compatible option than the one I had listed originally.

Yeah, it was a monster when I tried to do it before though - did SSD, HDD and externals. Was like a full time job to stay on top of it!

I might have a look at this again if there's enough interest, trouble is there are so many variables to consider, especially with WD's stream of colours and matching them up against equivalents from other brands...
Does anyone know which is the cheapest portable 2TB one that can be used to upgrade a ps4? Cheers
Great effort. And great prices .... Heat

This was on a lightning deal recently (£49.99) so may be worth keeping an eye out for a "second chance"

Anybody know if there's any compatible 1.5TB for PS3 still available or the next best option?
My research has only located the HGST Travelstar 5K1500 but its discontinued.

Thanks. Argos ebay had one for £52 the other day so I'll hold out a bit longer.
I am very impressed by the effort you put in, uplifting to see, thank you for sharing your finds.

It seems like there are almost no 1.5TBs available from any brand at the moment. My understanding is that 1.5TBs are actually 2TB drives that didn't quite make the cut (someone please correct me if that's not quite right). 1.5TBs pop up every now and then at good prices, probably because there's a batch that need to be cleared. I have checked WD, Seagate, Samsung, HGST and Toshiba and I can't find anything at even a half-decent price.

Best bet is to go for a 2TB instead. The Seagate one at £57.99 is the lowest priced option available. The drive inside is a Samsung M9T, which is a 9.5mm drive. Some of the 2TB from other brands won't fit because they're too chunky.

Absolutely what I've been scouring the net for. Thanks!
Good work Gem1ni0, I'll be keeping an eye on this thread
Great job - heat.

Thanks for the detail around 1.5TB. As far I can verify from looking elsewhere the PS3 can't accept greater than 1.5TB internally. I'll have to settle for a 1TB.
I am looking for a hard drive for my sons wii u as the memory became full very quickly. I believe I need a desktop max 2tb any suggestions ? Thanks
amazon.co.uk/Tos…VCY

If your after the 2TB HDD for £49.99 i'd advise getting it from amazon as of the link above to save £ on delivery

Hope this helps someone out
This is incredible, what a generous person you are to go to all that trouble. Thanks!

Thanks for checking - It would not work on my phone but Im on the PC now and it works on there fine.
Also if you are a student or know one, wd education store gives you 3TB portable my passport for 87£ and metallic one for 93£ among other reasonable deals (not worth mentioning for this comparison).

Thanks for the effort heat added

Yeah you either need a mains-powered desktop drive, or a portable drive with a Y-cable. Either way the max capacity is 2TB.

Here are a couple of options:
- 2TB Desktop @ £57.99
- 2TB Portable @ £49.00 + USB 3.0 Y-cable @ £4.00
