Like the anti-hero of a French New Wave film, real-life Gallic gangster Jacques Mesrine spent much of his life running from the law. In the first section of this two-part film directed by Jean-Francois Richet (ASSAULT ON PRECINCT 13), Vincent Cassel (EASTERN PROMISES) stars as the titular criminal. Cecile de France (SWITCHBLADE ROMACE) co-stars as a prostitute who joins him on the lam, while Gerard Depardieu (CYRANO DE BERGERAC) plays a crime boss.

And his wife is very nice too.I met her while I was playing the lead part in "Carry on up the can can" one of the least known of the carry on films I played "Cyrano de Big Nose" and Monica played the part of my wife "Madam Sacra Bleu" which was originally written for Joan Sims.
After Joanie pulled out to play "Widow twanky" in panto at the Bridlington working mens club, we managed to persuade Monica to join us so she could work with one of her acting idols Kennie Williams. I believe Monica was inspired to become an actress after hearing Ken's famous "Infamy infamy! they've all got it in for me!" speech from "Carry on Cleo" which won him the "Fray Bentos actor of the year award 1967".
Heady days indeed! After a brief torrid affair Monica returned to her husband while I went on to further triumph's such as the s.m.a.s.h adverts I was the 3rd robot from the left and the role that I am perhaps most famous for and without doubt the hardest part I ever played, that of the vaccuum cleaner in the "shake n vac" ad of 1978.
After a spell at the "Betty Ford" clinic in the states where I was finally treated for my addiction to over the counter meat pies I'm now living in Bognor Regis with my 8th wife Hetty, I am currently working on my autobiography "I came,I saw, I ate a pie." which is due for release in 2044 according to my Nigerian publishers as long as I continue to pay them 10k a year.

both films are excellent what a bargain.....

Heat added --all his films have been excellent ----also could Showman elaborate a little bit more about MIss Bertolucci(sic) .....you are LEGEND if you even got a kiss from perhaps (imo) the most beautiful woman of this era.

If anyone hasent seen it yet I'd recommend "Irréversible" quite innovative.

As for elaborating more concerning Miss Bertolucci, I'm afraid I cant as she has an injuction in force against me due to a rather regrettable incident concerning her pet dog and a Tesco delivery van I was driving while "resting" from my acting career.

You should also mention it is a film only for those that arent easy shocked, trust me, after watching all of this film you will be. If the swirling camera work dosent make you sick, the content will!

Both films are excellent and well worth it at this price, I watched them in one sitting and really enjoyed them both (part 1 has slightly tighter editing though in my opinion)

These films are subtitled (bien sûr)

Yes, quite so, it is rather unsettling in more ways than one.

I've always found when you find that you no longer realise you are reading the subtitles a good rule of thumb as to whether a subtitled film is any good or not, if you know what I mean.

I agree with you completely, and usually only the best foreign films obtain a UK release compared to all US **** reaching us.

*Bellucci

Irréversible is a phenomenal film. Most definitely not for anyone easily shocked or offended but undoubtably one of the best films of the last decade.

A true classic movie , it was said that Cassell never watched the subway scene ....and you can understand why .
The soundtrack is first class as well --Thomas Bangalter (one half of Daft Punk) --spinal scratch is a tune and a half.

Digipak... if anyone wants to know. Bought it at Play during their Easter Sale.

Been meaning to watch this for ages - looked a really good film...

And Monica... she ain't ugly - even forgave her for Shoot Em Up - in fact she made it a 10/10 film - without her.... 1/10 - and thats after a bribe from the director!

Irreversible is a top film. The ending in the park and the musical score is divine. If you disagree or think otherwise, you are likely to be a moron who only goes on holiday where people speak English and serve English food. And you think Jade Goody is a legend.

Aside from this, Mesrine is a great convoluted story about Jacques Mesrine (pronounced meyreen). Both films are excellent though I concede that Part 1 is more believable than part 2. Excellent find. Heat.

Agree with pretty much everything in here... awesome films and fantastic value

Apparently at Irréversible's showing at Cannes, a number of the audience got up and walked out in the opening 20 minutes. Nothing to do with the film's content, but due to the cinema sound system's amplification of the low-frequency background noise which caused feelings of disorientation and violent illness.

Allegedly director Gaspar Noé did this on purpose. Kudos.

I just didn't want anyone to think you were talking about Italian film director Bernardo Bertolucci. Could have caused some embarrasment.

Awesome films - buy it!

I found that as with 'Che' (another recent two-part film) the first part of Mesrine was by far the best. Part 2 seems to slow down with his 'Revolution' crap, but I would definitely recommend the set even if it is just subtitled. I pre-ordered my dvd on amazon for £11.98, so to get the blu-ray for the same price is an excellent deal!

Slightly off topic, but another good film i enjoyed set around the same time is "The Baader-Meinhof Complex" german with English subtitles

Enjoyed this very much. Nice to see a movie where the main character is an anti-hero for a change.

I'm waiting for the Hollywood version..............Jacques Mesrine or "Chuck" as he's known in this version is found to be completely innocent and a victim of a conspiracy by the CIA and pardoned he then marries a nun with a terminal illness becomes president and is assasinated by a lone gunman (or men) but is brought back to life by an unknown alien life form.due to a loss of memory he spends the rest of the film trying to find out who he is, helped only by an alcholic lesbian junkie ex cop named Doris and her tart with a heart lover Star.

One of the better gangster films that come out these days and theres some fit french birds in it too!
