Damn, I meant to pop in John Lewis in Newcastle to check out the freesat boxes on Sunday, but got sidetracked.

Which John Lewis did you see these in?

Well there is a different channel line up for starters, this receiver also does not require a card to get some basic channels.

My Sky HD box also came with a white viewing card

does sky hd have iplayer?

badgerpelt

does sky hd have iplayer?

No.

The freesat boxes might also have additional features such as iplayer compatibility (via network) and soon to be launched itv player.

Our first gen grundig box does the above so I would assume a newer box would be ready for it.

Also, these boxes have an EPG that has just the channels you want to see (eg, on our sky box you cannot remove the channels you are not subscribed to - not sure if the same on the sky hd boxes).

I can confirm Sky HD boxes also show all the channels you don't subscribe to in the EPG (pain in the backside).

Got my mam and dad a a grundig HD for their bedroom (so they could cancel multiroom at £120 a year). There is not a huge picture difference between the HD and SD channels on their little telly (full HD compliant) but the SD picture is far better than the picture from the old SD sky box. Why, I don't know.

i suspect what he means is with the sky box you have to have a current subscription to get even 1 channel

Ya, if you get a sky hd box and have standard sky subscription, you'll get the basic HD chans free

If you don't need a HD one get one of these -

hotukdeals.com/dea…308

I've just got 1 and its a great piece of kit for the money!

I will be checking our John Lewis for one of these if I get a chance. These are a really well reviewed reciever, basically the best of the budget models but not quite as good as a Humax.

If you are not planning on subscribing then these give a far more concise layout of the channels you can use, as well as offering the likes of i-Player and soon ITV player. Just a shame it's not a deal on a recorder.

Are you sure this box is "Freesat"?
It may be a free to air satalitte receiver but that doesn't make it "Freesat". It's difficult to tell when the link points to something different.

Wont be brand new..only sky can supply brand new sky boxes.

Yours was probably reconditioned

This is an excellent Box
I got mine from [email protected] £35 (I was lucky)
They are going for £85-£139

Cheap HD, just needs a sky dish to work of Astra 28e

I vote it hot

Stupid Q. please - I'm not well versed with Satellite stuff. When I moved into my new house 4 years ago the previous occupiers had a sat dish, with 1 LNB on it and the connection goes to a socket at the back of the telly. To get HD will I not need 2 LNB's on the dish - so therefore I'd need to either a) Add a 2nd LNB onto what I already have with a bracket or something or b) replace the whole dish and run a 2nd flylead? Not sure why I perceive you need 2 LNB's or am I just getting confused with Sky + or something?

Any advice as always is very gratefully appreciated.

AFAIK you only need 2 LNBs if you want to record one thing whilst watching another.
Or for additional TVs.

neilcaldwell
I believe you only need two LNBs if a) you are going to have more than 1 set top box(as in liv/room and bedroom) or b) you are going to have a set top box that has a hard drive, where you can watch one channel, while recording another.
I have the set up you have, and put a Humax Freesat HD box between the cable from the sat.,and the tv. It's brill and no money goes to Mr. Sky!!

Ethernet for BBC iPlayer, Youtube etc..

I don't understand satellites, will this work with the hotbird satellite? Or is it restricted to Astra?

ITV Player Beta

Freesat channel 999 > green green blue green green

Only try that if you have Humax box though

Don't replace the dish! Just buy a quad lnb off ebay for a fiver! Then get a few cables and Bob's your uncle!

The box will work with most satellites, but obviously you only get the channels that that particular sat. deals with!
Astra is the one most Brits. use in the British Isles, one reason being it has most of the viewing programmes we want.

No, it was brand new. Person was given it as an upgrade from Sky, but was happy with their existing plus box, so sold the NEW HD box (including white viewing card).

It is freesat branded on the box. it does iplayer through broadband etc..... Makes it freesat enough for me.

None in Newcastle John Lewis

Is this item a freesat or freeview box. Can someone clear it up please as the link is wrong.

It might be the same as this … It might be the same as this one?http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B001IZYQWE/ref=nosim?tag=joinfreesat-21

or this one - amazon.co.uk/Met…P58

it looks the same as the picture on johnlewis -
johnlewis.com/230…spx

in fact, ricability-digitaltv.org.uk/pag…830 seems to confirm the model number is a Zapbox T2 - so it is the same.

So Amazon at £57.98 appears a better deal.
