Hoping this might be helpful to at least a few of you. I just signed up a small start-up I'm working with at the moment, and thought it's a good deal to test the water with.

Sign-up to Microsoft Advertising (formally 'Bing Ads') and get £100 in search advertising credit when you spend £20 (so requires a credit/debit card).

In my case, I have 3 months from sign-up to spend the £20 and qualify for the £100 credit. I assume that's the same for everyone.

If you run a business and haven't signed up before, it's well worth doing.

You don't have to sell online, you can set up ads to either drive customers to your website, or you can run ads that drive phone calls or footfall to your business.

Tip: as soon as you finished signing up, pause your campaign you've just built or else you'll likely waste money as that campaign will be very basic.

Click the cog in the top-right of the screen and click 'switch to expert mode'

Now, either using the online interface or after downloading 'bing ads editor', set up your campaigns properly. You can import campaigns from Google Ads, if you already have them set-up.

If you're stuck, have a search online for some tips, as there are tons of blogs that will help you get started.

Perhaps a daft question but does Microsoft ads just work within the bing search results or do they have an ad network

They have a network of search partners.

You have some control over what you opt in to. The primary is bing, yahoo, AOL, msn, as well as other websites owned by those brands.

There's also 'search partners', which I'd initially opt out of until you understand your performance on the primary, high quality sites.

Search partners can be total junk (domain parking for example), or perfectly decent websites.

You can run a website URL report which lists the sites that you got clicks and impressions from. In the early days it's worth monitoring closely to block low quality traffic.
