good cam for bloggers, but unnecessary for skype or msn as they only transmit VGA as their maximum res

Didnt know that i thought they sent the max possible they could. So a pointless bargain for many.

YouTUBE now has 720p option?

Skype are going HD which will be interesting if broadband connections are good enough to cope.

Am considering getting this cam or one like it so that my parents can see their grandson over the internet as they live a long way from us.

This gets heat from me. Does well with low light unlike a lot of other webcams. I have the Lifecam Show but if I wasn't a cashstrapped student I would go for this.

was thinking the same thing relatives live on 2 different continents, would be good to use hd for that. what up stream speed do you need for the 720p???

the Logitech camera I'm currently using only shoots in 30fps at 320x240 and 15fps at 640x480 so this cant be that RUBBBBBBBBISH!

I picked this camera up at the end of last week, from Amazon - a good deal.

It's an excellent camera but I'd be careful to recommend it to others. The system requirements are listed as requiring at least a 2.0Ghz Core 2 Duo processor and it really does chew through your CPU while running. It also has a high pitch whine over the audio recording (noise cancelling interference) as well as flickering a tad at times. The CPU drain isn't so bad on the lower resolutions.

Now on the plus side:

1. Beautiful resolution and clear image.
2. Works VERY well in low(er) light. The software compensates well making all pictures look brighter and clearer than perhaps they are naturally.
3. Comes with some fairly decent webcam software.
4. Fairly small (glass surface just under the size of a £2 coin and it's as deep as the small edge of a credit card.
5. Autofocus is excellent. Yes it can sometimes take a second to focus but it's much better than the usual webcam lens twisting that you usually have to do to get a clear picture.

At this price, I would HIGHLY recommend it, even if you're not using the full resolution for webcam conferencing it's an excellent all round webcam.

Tell the yanks that 30fps is rubbish. It's not like they've been trying to unsuccessfully achieve it as their broadcast standard for years.

Yes. You'd notice yourself if you ever play games or watch any fast moving cameras or subjects (e.g. sports, racing, etc).

But this is a webcam. Not for broadcasting sports.

30 fps is fine.

I remember what put me off this. I only have a Pentium M 2.0Ghz laptop, it just wouldn't be able to handle the HD resolution. Definately one for desktops or higher spec laptops.

Hi Jamie,

We agree. I'm not one of those saying 30fps isn't fine, in fact I've got one of these cameras sat on top of my monitor right now and the video recorded is as smooth as any live television signal.

I would still recommend the camera even for a Pentium M laptop, it'll just need running at a lower resolution. You'd still get the benefit of autofocus, the clear glass lens, etc.

I wonder, given the CCD sensor, has anyone successfully hooked one of these webcams up to a telescope?

YES :w00t:

Considering UK/European TV is 25fps and the rest of the world (give or take) is 30fps I think it's fair to say 30fps will be fine for most people, I doubt this'll be used for many HD broadcasts by the BBC or Sky

seems like a decent deal.

It's an interesting question and I'd love to see some proper tests on it. Right now upload speeds are very slow. The usual for a home connection is 56kB/s with the best ADSL2+ connections topping out at 320kB/s. For comparison standard definition DVD video requires a maximum of 1225kB/s. So webcams are never going to reach top quality on current broadband connections and HD resolution ones seem pointless at first glance but it may be that lots of very low quality pixels produce a better picture than a few low quality ones scaled up.

ash.connor;7779538

Can humans even tell the difference between 30fps and above?

Oh yes, in fact with that low a frame rate you often get motion blur applied to the content to disguise the long gaps between frames and make it look smoother.

hi been looking for a web cam for a while, but i have no tech knowledge. My oldest boy (4yrs) has a sleep disorder, and we need some sort of wireless webcam to record some of his wilder nights. Any of you techies think this could do the job, we can turn bedroom light back on once he is asleeep.
The recording is for doctor, and not part of any twisted future wedding speech.
regards

I haven't got one of these yet but from what I understand this needs a computer with quite good specifications to record in high definition (clearer, bigger files) and if you were to use it on something lower spec you can turn down the resolution.

If you are thinking about getting a cheaper webcam, some of them don't do very well in low lighting. From my experience Logitech cameras usually do quite well in low lighting.

also have you considered getting something like a Veho muvi mini camcorder
]http//ww…152
with these you hit the record button leave it there and comeback for it later but its not a webcam (no wires) from my experience, it records quite well as long as the area is lit.

Good reviews. I will go for this as I have an old PC & I suspect it won't handle the HD webcam

personally I would avoid this and stick with something like Logitech, the LED's is a bit gimmicky and CMOS cameras usually do not do very well in low lighting, surprisingly some Logitech CMOS cameras I used works quite well in low lighting. CCD's are usually better.

Info on amazon:

Windows 7/Windows Vista/Windows XP (with Service Pack 2 or higher)
Intel Dual-Core 1.6 GHz or higher and 1 GB of RAM (recommended: Intel Dual-Core 3.0 GHz or higher and 2 GB of RAM)
1.5 GB free space
CD-ROM
USB 2.0

It should work, you may want to turn down the resolution a little (at 1280x720 the files will be quite large if it is an overnight recording)

Had this hooked up on a mates Win 7 system and the screen keeps flashing every 10 seconds or so. Think it has something to do with it thinking it's been operating on low light (even though it's not). It even flashes in the dark which makes it kinda annoying.
