The £849 Surface Book 2 (The model on offer) comes with an older 7th gen dual core i5.

Same as apple do...lots of laptops, tablets and Xbox and accessories on display - to be fair Ive been in the New York one and its is a decent store
Still overpriced, especially for the SB2 which is 2 year old hardware, indeed with an even older 7th gen i5 processor. Their products are undoubtedly quality but overpriced, and Microsoft have become too Apple-like in their price rigidity.

Also N.B. that there will probably be a new Surface Book and/or Surface Laptop announced in September.

The key is, like Apple, they don't actually fill all that space. The point is that there is actually lots of space, I believe.
Duel core £850 thought this was a apple post at first
Old processor and no USB-C charging (at least for the laptop).
I've got a surface and the only gripe I have is that I can't use it on my knee. Now I like the look of this. I still think the keyboard is The best I've ever used. But are there cheaper alternatives?

When you say Surface, do you mean Surface Pro, Book or Laptop? They're all very different. My work laptop is a Lenovo Miix 520 which is like a Surface Pro. It's pretty good and a bit cheaper. If you want a proper laptop (as in a notebook, not a tablet + attached keyboard) with a good typing experience and premium build quality on a budget, you could try a Huawei Matebook?

There are cheaper alternatives out there but most of them will lack security features like Windows Hello-compatible webcams and TPM 2.0, which may matter to some people; admittedly not to the average consumer but it explains part of the reason for the premium price.
I would be curious to know how many people would actually notice the difference between a 7th Gen and 8th i5 for most tasks they're actually going to use a Surface Book 2 for .

Even on eBay, a brand new 7th Gen i5 Surface Book 2 is going for around £1,000 and more, in most cases so good deal in my book.

Heat added, OP.

Sorry, yes it's a pro, hence the lap issues. Need to have the supersonic as I use tablet mode for work purposes. I'll look at the mix.

Ah I see. Well the Lenovo Miix 520 is usable on the lap, but not exactly comfortable. It performs well (I have the LTE model with an i5-8250U, 8GB 2133MHz DDR4 RAM and a 256GB SSD), the battery life is very good at least on the 'better battery' power mode, the touchscreen is responsive and looks nice, the keyboard attachment is backlit and nice to use though the integrated touchpad is a bit crap, it's very light and well-built and the charger has no brick which is nice (just a wall plug). It only has 1 x USB-A port, but does have a USB-C port as well as a 3.5mm headphone jack. There's also a fingerprint scanner, though my work IT department disabled it so can't say if it's any good!

Deals are back live for both book 2 and the laptop 2
in store had been active on mon and tue
These deals were just for the first week celebrating the opening of Microsoft's first European store. I managed to click & collect the Surface Laptop (Black) 8GB RAM, 8th Gen i5, 256MB SSD (NVMe) for £300 off. Plus American Express were giving £100 back for purchases over £400 at Microsoft. Plus 5% TopCashBack. So just over £800. Not bad First impressions are great. Display is superb. Keyboard good. I played some 4K movies on it. Wow! Looks like the Surface Laptop is matched against the MacBook Air, the Surface Book against the MacBook Pro & the Surface Pro 6 against the iPad Pro. The Surface laptop has minimal ports to make it look super slick I guess. Just one USB 3.0 port (can connect a USB hub for more ports). There is a USB port on the small AC Adaptor too. A mini DisplayPort so I can connect a monitor. Yes, it would be good if it had a usb c port but as I don't have many devices that are usb c (just a Samsung S9) I can live without it. I'll get an adaptor if I need to. So I think 2 USB ports are enough for me. I have a macbook pro which I'll now sell. I fancied a change Here are the current deals at the Microsoft Store in London microsoft.com/en-…ces
