The reason these are sold with bad batteries (actually incorrect to say bad because they are holding enough charge for 2 hours standby minimum) is because there's a real risk of breaking the screen when opening the device to change the battery, which would write off any profit in the device should the screen break.

Here's a screen replacement guide, which is the same process to open the device to get to the battery, very important to note should you require a battery replacement in the future >

    ifixit.com/Gui…347

"Use this guide to replace a cracked or broken screen on a Microsoft Surface Pro 5.

There is a significant chance that you may break the unreinforced and fragile display panel during this procedure. Be sure to apply plenty of heat and be extremely careful during the prying stage."

As I said same procedure to change the battery, heed the warning because if you break the display you'll need a new one as there's zero chance you will remove the digitiser , relaminate it and replace it and even then you'll probably break the LCD anyway writing off the part. (edited)

That battery disclaimer is a huge red flag. They can't claim to be refurbished unless they function as intended. This is not how these devices function as intended.

Cleaned up for resale is NOT refurbished.

100% agree, having previously bought one of the Surface 4's that came with no functional battery I am not sure if under these terms if I would have been stuck with it and little recourse for a refund. Under the previous offer (differnet vendor) they paid for return, I ordered a second one and have been very happy.

Anyone have any idea why that is so much cheaper on esupply? They seem to have decent reviews.
  4. shalton's avatar
Thought on initial glance. Wow, sounds cheap. As they say, "if it sounds too good to be true - it probably isn't" .
    fishmaster's avatar
7th gen Intel device released in May 2017. This is absolutely the expected price for one of these as it is now getting on for 6 years old hardware. Not cheap, not super expensive and best off not bothering with because you will get battery replacement disaster woes with one of these. Company I worked for didn't even bother changing the battery on these because the labour was too intensive to be worth it. If you're a one man band whose labour doesn't cost as much and you're not changing the battery as a business decision, I still wouldn't get one.

    Heed the warnings ahead! >

Clearly these are being sold with basically zero battery life, so you will have to run them on mains power all the time or it will drive you insane.
    Somersett's avatar
No- they have battery life, but it ain't great, and with a Surface the battery is always in use, even when the device seems 'off'. I've an older tablet (one of those real cheapies when Intel was literally giving away the mobile low-end CPUs to the manufactures to build market share) and that properly powers off, so months later the battery still has the remaining charge.

However, I agree with the idea that they are mostly for mains use. I think mine would give about two hours on battery. For some people that may be all they need for a bit of evening browsing.

I had one of their Pro 4 - battery life was several hours and it was in good condition. If you buy one run a battery report and if not happy contact them for a refund or replacement.
If you are happy with 125gb there is a different seller (and no windows) selling for £140 with ebay code. There was only 3 left but they have added more stock ebay.co.uk/itm…085 (edited)

I know it isn't ideal..but if battery isn't great and you want to use it on the move..then can you not use a battery bank??
    JWatermalone's avatar
Only the Surface Pro 7 and onwards have USBC so not sure how you would charge this with a portable power bank

    Random Thinkpad picture in there.....

Surface 5's are the ones without the fans.... I've got one.... good stuff! Bit scared of the minimum 2 hr battery thing though... Worth heating all the same. (edited)

Feels like deja vu from when they were flogging the Surface Pro 4 refurbs for cheap. Would hope this model has better battery life...

Any issues with this running W11?
    fishmaster's avatar
Has a 7th gen CPU so not officially supported. You can get Windows 11 to work with some simple workarounds, but Microsoft have been very awkward with major feature updates and they've started watermarking unsupported devices on latest updates

    anoopcnair.com/wat…re/

Again you can find workarounds. One example I can give is with my Dad's laptop a 5th gen Intel, installed Windows 11 using workarounds, but it won't update to 22H2 because it checks if the hardware is supported, ok not a problem just get an iso and do in place upgrade with workarounds, but then it greys out the keep files and settings, so need to backup and might as well reinstall by then.

It might be worth the hassle but MS doesn't want to give you major features upgrades on unsupported hardware so you have to spend time backing up and reinstalling usually.

I think you can connect any make of blutooth mouse or keyboard if you want. Please correct me if wrong
    fishmaster's avatar
Anything that is compatible with Windows will work. Some devices use their own USB dongle, so you'd plug that in to a free port. Rest of devices should work with the built in Bluetooth.
  19. idarek's avatar
If you need computer than yes, but be aware that due to hardware limitation this device will not get windows 11.

For anyone buying this, I’d bought a SP4 from a previous deal on here, and super happy with it.
I’d set up a discussion about art packages, gaming, helpful info etc for others that bought a SP so posting link here if it helps

These were terrible compared to the Surface Pro 6. They were dual core machines vs the quad cores on the SP6 and they struggled. It’s much bigger jump than the usual generational jump that you’d see between the SP4 and 5.

The irony is that the SP6 ends support this year. The SP5 ends support next year, but the 6 can run Windows 11 and the 5 can’t. (edited)

Mine has just been delivered. 91% battery health and not a mark or scratch on the screen or back. Slight scratch on back of keyboard (cover) which makes no difference. What condition is everyone else's?
    gari189's avatar
Ordered one from Eolonline. Condition is excellent but battery life 62% and 151 cycles. I will see how long it operates from battery but if its poor its going back.
  25. richc's avatar
Just received mine, condition is perfect not a mark on it. Battery life 66%, cycle count 76 but lasts just over 3 hours so will do me
    howay's avatar
not sure how it all works..91% here and 244 cycles.
