Bundle deal with choice of keyboard covers saving £369.00 on (their) sold separately price. I haven't seen the i5 version anywhere near this price (it's £799 on Amazon with keyboard).

I'm very tempted myself but lack of flexibility to upgrade the 4gb ram is off-putting.

Platinum keyboard
Cobalt blue keyboard
Burgundy keyboard

Also 3 yr warranty on the pro and 2 year on the keyboard.

Seems like a decent deal to me, especially being able to pick your own colour of keyboard. Plus £10 cheaper for the black type cover @ £669.95

laptop for the RAM upgrade
Actually roasting hot. I got the bundle from John Lewis on Black Friday for £764. I use it for a lot of work and media. Do not let the RAM put you off. The key to this device is it's form factor. You can still be very productive work this. I use office, nvivo, spss, mendeley, OneNote, web, and a lot of background tasks all together, and it doesn't flinch.

You should buy the pen though. It's a meeting/conference marvel.
Bit off topic - has anyone come across other note taking apps / software other than onenote?
@D_Jay_M This could be what you want?

It depends on how you will use it. You'll not be using a laptop like a tablet, and the surface pro will never be like a dedicated laptop.

This is only worthwhile with the pen in my opinion.

I have downloaded, but not tried one yet. I'll check my sp and comment back. I have not thought to change because I know OneNote works, and syncs across my devices.
Rather get a Xiaomi Air for £600. 8GB RAM. 256GB nvME SSD including another spare slot.

Surface Pro tablet are priced very high. For around £600 you can get a 13" Xiaomi Air and better specs. That laptop is light and compact.

Anyway to fix the page width to A4 yet without using onenote 2016 to make the page template yet? I’ve just spent an hour looking at the forums etc and it appears not unless I’m missing something

Yeah just rip the keyboard off and solder in a digitizer and you good to go, as long as you don't mind the drop in resolution

Which ones don’t have backlit keys? I bought a type cover yesterday from Amazon, just the standard one for £90 and it’s got backlit keys. If there’s a cheaper one without backlit keys I might be tempted as I normally use a BT keyboard.

im not sure before buying i asked here if the keyboard was backlit and was told they have been backlit for years Anyways from what i can tell the bundled keyboard with the M3 version is the one that was released with the S3/S4 i cant find anything solid to back that up though, but im assuming the one bundled with the i5 version will be exactly the same. Its confusing because before buying i read some reviews that said the keyboards plastic and not alcatara covered and while i can confirm its plastic its also wrapped with some kinda material. I thought it was odd that the reviewer never mentioned it or the backlight, I dont think its alcantara ive never felt that before but the materials soft and quite nice a lot better than hard plastic on my laptops anyways.

After reading your comment about the 90 quid standard keyboard though im thinking mine might be the same one and maybe just needs the backlight turning on or the driver reinstalling gunna have a mooch now see if i can figure out whats up id expect it to be enabled by default like.

If you got it from Amazon, you'll be well within your cooling off period. The bundle keyboard is backlight btw.

Alcantara is a man made suede made by Alcantara, so it should be obvious which keyboard you have, the one budled with this offer is the Signature keyboard which is the Alcantara version.

yep reinstalled the driver and it was lit up after a reboot i had a look at the returns section it says.

"Please note that you must return each item in the same condition in which you received it. This means that newitems must be returned new, unused and complete. Used items must not have any additional signs of use or damage

as its open and been used since wednesday looks like im screwed.

i know what it is just never felt it or seen it in in person before, amazon were i bought mine from doesnt give any info at all on the keyboard it just says black type cover not signiture or alcantara or even that its backlit. But yeah i just got my backlight working and its covered in material so i guess it is the signiture cover.

I get the feeling you'd get away with it, especially if you found something wrong with it. Amazon are usually great with returns.

Have you had any issues with it? With Windows in particular, my asus tablet received a forced Windows update and now the wifi connection cuts out every 10 mins even though it shows as connected. Every other non-Windows device I have still works fine.
no problems the wifi reception is really good i use it a lot in my caravan using bt hotspots it works anywhere but my samsung pro tab only works in my caravan at the livingroom table so i feel the wifi is better with the surface

Got a link? Thanks
The deal is gone now.
I too already jumped on the Amazon Core M deal ... but it should be enough for my purposes (if anything I'd rather upgrade the RAM or storage than the CPU).

Even ignoring the tablet vs laptop debate, what about say battery life? (Notebookcheck shows significantly poorer battery runtimes compared to SP 2017 Core M or i5 - though that's the 2016 version of the Xiaomi Mi Air, maybe the 2017 model is better.) Also even for a laptop, I like having a touchscreen on an ultra-portable model.

Here's the thing: if you just want a regular laptop, the Surface Pro isn't for you and there are plenty of cheaper/better alternatives. But for those of us who do want things such as touchscreen, 2-in-1 ability and/or battery life, it's a great device and a good price imo (especially with this discount!), and a Xiaomi Mi Air isn't comparing like with like.
Remember battery life don’t make sense. Eventually the life of battery will get shorter over usage. So pointless debating about battery LOL.

eventaully you will rely more on directly plugging it to wall outlet however battery can be replaced on Xiaomi air unlike surface.

I have not found a way on the app, which is weird. I have Office 365 but prefer the app to OneNote 2016, but it had its limits.
BTW, I tried penbook, which i got for free. It is just as well as it is just not very good. It has A4 pages, and save to PDF, but I don't think it has any sync features.

Thanks for your reply. I’ve had my new surface for a week now and I just can’t get into it. I think I’m gonna sell it and just stick with my iPad Pro 12.9 for now.

It all depends on what you want. The Surface Pro is more capable than the iPad pro in almost every way, especially when it comes to productivity tools. On the other hand, the iPad obviously has the better performance purely in tablet only terms such as dedicated app consuming.

I did work out that once you set a template in OneNote 2016, it transfers over to the app.

Having tried it, I'm actually preferring not having the page size set, because it seems to defeat the purpose of electronic note taking, which is to be free of paper limitations.
