Windows RT? No thanks ...

If you want a MS tablet get one of the atom based ones which runs the full Windows 8 OS, not this travesty

RT for me? No thanks. But for my parents? Sure. They love theirs. Battery life is amazing, they can browse the internet with full browser (flash), use office, send mails and new apps are getting released every day. All of this without installing any toolbars, malware, or viruses. Many people simply do not need full windows and surface is great for them.

Not bad for someone, i would of loved one of these when i was a student! Lugging a big laptop round a was pain sometimes. I don't think it could replace having a laptop for a student, but its certainly a good companion device.

Windows RT is useless. If you want Windows on a tablet get a proper Windows 8 one. They can be had for not much more than £200 nowadays. Windows 8 has its advantages over Android/iOS, but RT is neither here nor there.

Being a student currently, there are 5 main 'laptops' in use;
Macbook Pro
Macbook Air
Toshiba Laptop provided for dyslexics/low income families
Your typical PC World purchase usually with stickers galore (£3-500 upsold product)
Surface RT (mainly with blue keyboard, were they free for a while??)

I was shocked by the last one being popular, but I'm seeing more and more of them across the university - They look great, have office pre-installed, and work well with our wifi network across campus.

I don't believe you (Sorry and no offence). Win RT is horrible and I would recommend people get Surface Pro with at-least an i3 or i5 CPU

Different strokes for different folks people. For this price I reckon this is a really good combination device. Top quality tablet for those duties and able to easily be very productive with a keyboard. Many people have either no need for full windows or OS-X on the move as they have a larger machine to do those tasks at home or simply don't use any other software.

If you just want to watch netflix, youtube and surf the web you should get a power hungry i5?

seems legit.

I've got one (a Surface RT I mean) and I love it, genuinely. The app selection isn't great but having full flash in IE means you can do most things without a dedicated app (like spotify for instance). If there was one downside it used to be a bit slow but since the 8.1 update it's great, more than adequate for my needs, great battery life and great for productivity.

meaning every single iOS or android tablet is a travesty? the atom based tablets can't run anything anyway, you need a much more powerful processor to get anything done on the full OS. I don't think you really understand the point of this tablet do you?

Do you buy an Ipad and expect a Macbook experience?
Buy a Android tablet and expect a Chromebook experience?
So why do so many expect a Full Windows experience from a Windows TABLET?

Before people slate the Surface can they think about what they are saying, would they be posting the same about IPads?

Surface -
screen looks great, clear crisp and vibrant
Great web experience apart from lack of Silverlight so no Skyplayer or Amazon Prime Video.
Lovely video experience, great sound and quite loud.
Good but not great app selection - Netflix is there though and more selection in Win 8 App Store coming every day.
Excellent for streaming footy via web sources - Vipbox among many.
10hours a month of Xbox Music streaming, free music for while you work (only free on Surface)
Free Office suite so work can get done and save to OneDrive so can pick up at home on full PC.
Add a Vpn or Unodns and watch all the USA tv websites in desktop mode - inc free Hulu website.
Add micro sd card and you can have another 64gb of storage for under £30 and you can add usb hard drives for easy transfer.
Build quality of the Surface is exceptional and looks great.

So once you get past the limitations of a Tablet OS then the Surface is a great tablet at a great price compared to an Ipad.
I own a Ipad 3, a Surface and a crappy Acer W3-810 full windows 8.1 tablet (which I use as a throw about tablet to take to work for break times) and as an experience the Surface is great.
If you can afford a Surface Pro then yes, it's a better deal all around but near £500 is a totally different price point and you pay for the Pro extras with half the battery life.

My advice is to buy this deal if you are a student as you can do all you need to on this now budget tablet, but remember you are not buying a laptop.

Don't think people understand that this is the Windows equivalent to an iPad or nexus 10. less functionality but useful and fun in it's own way. also much cheaper and longer in battery life.

Having tried all sorts of laptops and tablets recently and found none to meet my requirements I reluctantly decided to buy a surface pro that I had previously dismissed due to its unusual form factor and weight. Hands down it has turned out to be the best out of all I tried and the cheapest, so it is a keeper! The only thing that I don't like about the pro is the battery life. I'm wondering if this RT tablet would work as a compliment to the pro for days when I am going to be away from a power source. I assume the accessories are interchangeable and that it would give me a second charger that I wanted (which costs £35 from MS). In reality, are these up to scratch for video playback, browsing and office use? That is all I would want it for..

Many people do not understand the point of this tablet, and there is a good reason for it. New Bay Trail quad-core Atoms can run full Windows 8 OS with no problem at all. Several Office documents, browser with a few tabs and a pdf reader all at the same time without the slightest hesitation on a full HD screen. Android/iOS have much better and more apps than Windows RT and are better supported. Windows RT simply has no place on the market. It has no unique advantages over either Android, iOS or Windows 8. Whatever you might want to do on a tablet there is an OS that will do it better.

Owning a Surface (one not two) I can easily say that its great for video.
Netflix is crisp and clean, as is the footy streaming and Hulu plus (thanks to unodns) all work great.
With the right apps you can play all video formats inc mkv's so yes it's great.
Web browsing is exactly like your surface pro - metro IE in windows 8 mode and desktop IE in normal desktop mode but no Silverlight so Sky Player doesn't work.
Office is exactly the same also and tether the Surface to your phone and easily switch between your Pro office work and your Surface Rt thanks to One Drive.

I just tried putting this in my 'cart' to see if it offers any free extras and it says 'Get your FREE Touch Cover' but if you select a touch cover it attempts to charge for it. If this included an unwanted touch cover as well, that would bag about £30 back on ebay..

Cover is worth it for protecting the screen from scratches.

But I already have one with my pro..

Yeh, suppose.
I would just have one on each myself. I hate screen protectors with a passion so I usually ensure my case covers the screen on my devices.

Its irrelevant anyway as I just spoke to MS and they said there is no cover included with this despite what it says!

will they do teachers' deals in September again?

I can see them doing a good deal before new uni term in september, whilst also most likely having new surfaces in stock. Might be worth holding off till then if like me you've more or less finished uni for this year

Just a point to note that the chargers that come with the RT and Pro are different wattages (24W and 48W respectively), from what I just looked up they both work with each device but you may be waiting a while for your Pro to charge with the 24W charger.

However cheap they may be in September, the step up in cost from Surface 1 to 2 will be about the same.
So buy now and enjoy it, wait and take a risk that Microsoft want to shift the stock.
I can see Windows Rt being gone by September anyway, merged with Windows Phone and called Windows Portable or the like.
It's already heading that way and they have said that 3 format set up is wrong.
So RT needs to go to Phone or Full OS in the near future.

Surface RT is a great tablet for travel, far more flexible than an ipad. Plays most formats too.

I would recommend people not to get the Surface series. First of all I like to clarify installed latest drivers/firmware from Microsoft and Windows 8.1. Surface series are complete garbage due to;

Battery
First of all Surface RT has long battery life and the Surface Pro has a weak battery life (3 hours or less). The durability of battery on both series is crap. I am on my third Surface Pro (due to battery and overheating issues, touch cover). I had this for a month now and this is what the battery reports;

Wear Level: 6%
Designed Capacity 42002 mWh
Full Charge Capacity 39856 mWh
Cycels Count: 42

That's because they use the cheap LG batteries!

Touch Cover
The touch cover they give you first bundled with Surface Pro is horrible. The response from buttons are slow and I had issues with
connectivity which will randomly stop working, way round this is to detach & re-attach touch cover but doesn't always work so you have to restart. Let's say your tying up a document and all of a sudden any letter will lock up for example resulting in "eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee" being continuously scattered. Way round this is to detach and re-attach touch cover.

Overheating/Fan
I don't get the reason behind this. I attach the charger and I am only using Office for documents or sometimes web browsing IE (no videos). Fan will rev up to max and the entire touch screen will get really warm including the entire back. Checked temp reading it reports 72 degrees LOL.

Windows 8.1/Internet Explorer 11
Windows 8.1 should be taken down as it makes the Surface Pro unstable along with incompatible drivers. Intel graphic utility missing. Windows 8.1 comes with a newer version of IE which makes web browsing (desktop mode) useless. Most websites have issues working properly such as eBay message, Facebook photo uploading etc. Done a factory reset on IE and yet still doesn't make a difference. You might be thinking why not use Chrome or Firefox. Well Chrome has issues running correctly with Surface Pro due to DPI resolution and makes everything look blurry which hurts the eyes if you will be web browsing for a long period of time. Firefox has issues playing videos in YouTube and it's not fully compatible with touch on Surface Pro.

Touch Screen Keyboard
Useless. For example look at Google/Apple tablets, when you touch any part of the UI which needs interaction regarding text they bring up the keyboard automatically. On the Surface RT/Pro it's a nightmare, you have to manually open up and close the keyboard if you need it for web browsing or writing any sort of text.

Surface Team Support
Again useless! Told them about overheating/fan noise. IE and they confirm nothing wrong LOL. I told them about my touch cover issues and they said nothing wrong with it LOL. Asked for technical support guess what warranty expired when I only had it for a month LOL. Got told to change warranty date as I sent proof of purchase twice and what they do is just reduce the Surface Pro warranty.

I can go on with the amount of problems using Surface Pro which I faced. Microsoft need to do a lot of work and fix these issues. However after escalating my case to a manager and outlining the problems I faced, he offered to refund money after I send surface pro bundle back. I got all the shipping labels and collection is booked for Monday.

My advice don't bother with any of the Surface series. Wait until Microsoft fix these problems. It makes usability a nightmare. Personally from Windows Vista, Microsoft have flopped. Windows XP is the perfect Windows OS. Microsoft might as well quit while there ahead.

Think of it this way. Would you pay £399 for Surface Pro or £700 odd for Surface Pro 2;
- with no upgradability
- buggy Windows 8.1 which makes the entire user experience bad
- hardware issues
- incompatible drivers

Windows 7 64 bit has been a great OS do do not agree with your comment. My RT has been fine. It is not perfect but no tablet is.

As quite a few of you own a surface, can you watch things on 1channel or its equivalent? I tried in the shops but the sites are always blocked.
Also are flash sites OK, as I couldn't get them to load in-store but I think it was because of slow connections.

Fantastic little tablet, I'm a teacher so have no interest in the typical apple apps (although I've yet to find anything that I can't get on this). It runs excel, word, publisher (all free remember), adobe reader for mark schemes, internet explorer, file explorer and more all at the same time without hesitating. And the typing is fantastic.

Dont think of it as a less capable PC, think of it as an incredibly capable tablet and it makes a whole lot more sense, especially in a working environment!

I've never encountered any of these issues on an RT. I agree with two points though, the battery on the surface is fantastic, but not auto-opening the keyboard can occasionally be a pain!

Clearly you are not a happy bunny and the Surface Pro is not for you. I've had my Surface Pro for three weeks and i've experienced none of the hardware issues you mention. True, Windows 8.1 is not perfect but i find it completely acceptable and it will improve with time. Agree, that the original Surface Pro's battery life of approx 4.5 hours is not good but that's partly why i managed to get it at such a good price in the first place. The Surface concept is a great one IMO. The hardware looks and feels top notch. When you examine what else is available at the £215 price point, the versatile Surface RT offers a unique blend of fun and practicality. Hot from me.

Battery is something I never worried about on the Surface Rt.
That said I have serious worries on when the battery eventually dies.
I can walk into an Apple Store, hand over cash and get the battery replaced/ipad exchanged for okay money.
If I dare, I can change the battery myself - the Surface is suppose to be very hard to crack open and no Microsoft stores so then the battery change may be a pain in a few years.

Battery is the main issue. Surface that use LG batteries are crap in terms of durability.
That's one of the main reasons why I hate the Surface. Microsoft should have made it where it's easy to access the battery, RAM, SSD. Simple for example removable back cover to access these parts.
