I like the look of the surface laptop 3 but if you want anything above the 8gb RAM /128Gb base spec (which is pretty pathetic for a 2020 spec device!) the prices are ridiculous

Quite tempting - though it's annoying that most of the cheaper/more desirable options are not available right now. Will check back in coming week.
I just picked up a Surface Pro 2 for £100 from eBay last week.

Thank you!

128GB is fine for a Surface Pro - you just put a microSD in it and use the SSd only for the OS/software, put all your files on the microSD/Onedrive. Love my old Surface Pro 3 used this way, but as I really only use it as a laptop I was going to replace it with as Surface laptop. Unfortunately there's no microSD slot in the Surface laptop and the models with bigger SSDs are - as you say - stupidly expensive.

Can't you get those USB flash drives that are flush with the chassis? Guess it depends how many USB ports it has and how many you need.
I looked at this shame surface pro 2 and 3 are valued the same :/

Hopefully Windows 10 does this better than Windows 7 - there used to be no recycle bin on SD cards mounted as drives. There were also issues with sharing. I gave up on it, so never bothered trying in Win10.
im thinking of the i5 surface laptop 3 - platinum alcantara.

This is i5 with 126gb storage - £999 and i have a surface 3 to take off £250.

So at £750, is this a good deal or am i paying for the name. will i get a better laptop with better specs elsewhere for £750?

thank you

I put my Onedrive folder on the SD card so I have access to all my files without WiFi but they're also automatically backed up in case of loss or failure (and the SD is encrypted with Bitlocker).
This worked brilliantly in Windows 8, briefly in Windows 10 when it was launched, then they broke it (so I rolled back to Win8.1 for a few months) before fixing it again. It's working well again now, let's hope they keep it that way.

@custardbomb Where did you see the student and armed forces discount on these new products? I can only see it on the current gen of SP6 and SL2.

If you click the product links on the offer page there's a link so you can check your eligibility, if you are then the link doesn't appear but the change is reflected in the price displayed which you can see below from the Pro X.38667199-FXYCK.jpg
Do you think you can trade in two surface pros for one device?

You'll absolutly get a better specced laptop if you shop around, esp with black friday around the corner

What you're paying for isn't name though, it's form factor. It's one of the lightest, thinest laptops out there that actually feels well built and durable.

Having owned several Windows and Apple laptops in the past, I personally couldn't go back to anything big and clunky with nosiy fans and heating problems resulting in sweaty or burnt legs during use
Got the Surface Laptop 2 (8gb/128gb) in Black Friday last year for £770, so £500 trade in after having owned the device for a year is really good.

On the flip side, not sure I can justify paying £1,629 for the 16gb/256gb model - £500 my laptop trade in. Going from 8gb to 16gb is the only justifible upgrade for me.

From the base modal, they essentially want £300 for the 8gb to 16gb upgrade and £300 for the 128gb to 256gb upgrade. If only they offered an option of 16gb/128gb

Thank you. It's the slim and light I'm after. With a £350 trade in, is this the best to go for? I currently have an MSI ge62. It's a v quick laptop with a dedicated and good GPU, but it's massive bulky and bloody hot!

The GPU on this will be nearly pointless in terms of gaming. Might handle Sims/Minecraft but beyond that forget it

As to whether it's worth it, it's hard to guess. Last year the Surface Laptop 2 came out around the same at around the same price (£1000 for 8/128). But a month later in Black Friday it was possible to get that model for £770, that's when I got mine, you can search back through HUKD to find multiple threads about it as it was discounted at several suppliers

Whether next month the Laptop 3 will follow the same discount on Black Friday (letting you get the laptop for a similar price while keeping your old one) is anyone's guess

I think its pretty safe to say these will drop by £100-200 by xmas. Maybe with the student discount and trade in its worth it, tho.

I wouldn't call that a "drop" as to my that implies a permanent discount, but from what I've seen, the SL2's price has gone up and down over the last 12 months. The base 8/128 went hot on here every time it dropped below £800, but outside of periodic offers, it maintained it's usual £900+ price tag

But yeah I can see a discount happening on Black Friday, and probably again in the Christmas sales

It is a drop for anyone on HUKD. Guaranteed you can get them for £100-£200 less in just a month or two. That's a drop, just for us.
