Microsoft Windows 10 Insider Preview ISO - April '15 Build (10074)

Found 2nd May 2015
Following my post last month, I thought it was worth a follow up as the April 'Insider' Preview ISO's of Windows 10 are now available to download publicly.

Windows 10 Insider Preview (x64) - Build 10074 - go.microsoft.com/fwl…146

Windows 10 Insider Preview (x86) - Build 10074 - go.microsoft.com/fwl…147

KEY: 6P99N-YF42M-TPGBG-9VMJP-YKHCF

If you're not sure what an ISO is, don't have a PC or Virtual Machine to test on - this probably isn't for you. However, keep in mind when the final version of Windows 10 is released it will be free (as a one off) during the first year of release for current Windows 7 and 8 customers.

Thanks morgie, tried last release and couldn't get working as a VM.

I'll no doubt upgrade when it goes live but nice to tinker around prior to the launch.

No problem. Were you using Hyper V, VMWare.... something else?

I had the same issue on VMWARE last time too.

I used Virtual Box but had to use the 32 bit version of Win10. Installed and ran but that's as far as I went with it.

VirtualBox, all seems to be going well, quite liking it so far.
Real improvement on Win8.1, looking nicely polished and smooth.

Which version?

This won't convert to the full version when it goes live?

I'm just building a PC and don't want to buy windows if it's going to be free soon.

Unknown - might be worth signing up to the Windows Insider program, installing and crossing your fingers. Otherwise look out for a deal on Win7 or Win 8/8.1.

Had no end of problems with the last build. Had to wipe my laptop and reinstall Windows 8.

Announced this week that those doing testing on the insider program will be converted to full release for free. Also, any windows 7 or 8 install will be a free upgrade to a valid 10 license including 'licensed and unlicensed installs' - MS really want everyone on 10

Do you have some links confirming that people in the Insider Program are getting the free upgrade? The people who were at BUILD might be but the 3 million+ others I very much doubt are.
And it was previously confirmed that not genuine Windows 7 and 8 users will be able to upgrade to Windows 10 but would stay not genuine, do you have a link confirming that change too?

This is a deal?!

This is a deal?!

Yes, anything is a deal if you try hard enough.

I installed VM in win 7 pro and pointed it to the iso on the drive, got the new Sq's window symble on blue screen then it said only 32bit and wouldn't go passed this. It is a 64bit M/c

Seeing issues on reinstalling win 8 above. Would it be better to dual boot on it's own drive and select on boot up?

No, it's a freebie, hence the section.

If you're happy to dual boot, yes. Otherwise try Virtualbox, see link info above. HyperV in Win 8.1 has also been fine, but unsure if the same version is used in Win 7, worth a shot if you already have it configured.

A colleague showed me an article after build about the unlicensed situation, but looking around now I suspect it was based on the previous news reuters.com/art…318 which you are right, was followed up with a clarification that they would be upgraded but probably unlicensed. I don't think I looked closely enough at the time. However, as they will then be on the new build, with its new upgrade cycle (which is rumoured to be subscription based) it may not be so much of an issue for MS anyway - all those botnet/backdoored pirated installs disappear overnight and those previously non paying users on a system that asks them nicely for a ten quid fee to upgrade at next release?

As for free for those insiders, I can't find a single thing about it! Same colleague showed me it this week and I now suspect some elaborate joke

Basically, ignore everything I typed last night.... in my defence I was distracted trying to get my main pc working after finally deciding to get it onto 10 and finding it booting to a nice blank screen (I'm sure it's irony or something similar )

Have to be honest, I much preferred 8.

Just wanted a start button that works!.

R.I.P. Windows Media Center.

"Any PC that is upgraded from Windows 7 or Windows 8.1 to Windows 10 will lose the Media Center functionality, and there's no way to get it back."

This works so well on my Parallels VM!

I use VMware Player for this. It is really unresponsive in a virtual machine (and I'm not the only person who has experienced this).

I am on build 10041 and when I try to upgrade to latest after about an hour of setting up files it reverts me back to my previous build 10041, ( giving me some error )which seems really sluggish to start n chrome takes ages to start.
Any ideas what I should do?

Installed in virtualbox. Create new MS account fails as it doesn't display all the error codes so it's possible to sit in an endless loop of entering captchas which are correct yet it reports as invalid (skip step during setup). Unresponsive to mouse clicks on start menu, restarted machine and loaded up a webpage, unresponsive until the page fully loaded in that new browser.

Maybe next time.

I was hoping that Microsoft would cease 32 bit operating systems with Windows 8. Then hoping for same with Windows 9, er, I mean 10.

Are you getting the Windows 10 'Updates are available but we temporarily need 0.00 MB of space to install.' error message when upgrading your build? If so..... myslowpc.net/wp/…623

No it restarts then does the percentage screen then after an hour or so says there was an error n says its reverting back to my previous build which is 10041.
I have downloaded the build 10074 so how should I put it on USB ? By Rufus method is not working. what way should I use ?

Might be a similar thing still relating to free space. How much free space on your Windows drive/partition?

Ah. Well I think that may be your issue - free up some drive space as suggested at that link. One of the builds installed language packs that took up a lot of unnecessary space.

As for the start up....fingers crossed.

Its trying to repair c drive for some reason n keeps on restarting to that.
