free upgrade to 8.1

Upgrade from Windows 7 or later (?!)....must be useful to someone.

Watch out, Window haters incoming.

It sucks
Vista was better.
Windows 10 will be out soon.
Microsoft are ripping you off.
It has a terrible interface.
blah blah blah

Now I've covered most usual moans. It isn't too bad, may people prefer to re-skin it but the security is better than Win 7 and it has better perrformance along with less memory requirements.

I laugh at Microsoft's inability to properly market some things.

"you must have a Windows 7 PC to use", I bought a Windows 8 upgrade licence back on release and yes, you needed a Windows 7 PC to actually buy the software but after that though, you can simply use the same disc to do clean installs.

Nothing wrong with Windows 8/8.1 so if you're going to moan I have a simple trick that works for you:

1. Move mouse to the browser back button.
2. Click using the left mouse button.
3. Continue browsing HotUKDeals.
4. You've successfully refrained from being an absolute twit (there are other words I could use, more harsh words, but this is a family friendly forum after all.)

This is a downgrade from W7!

I cant find the key either. It was for my old computer that died, thought I wrote it down. Oh well. Dont suppose I can just use this as is?

I would at least wait until we know for sure whether Windows 8/8.1 users will get to upgrade to 10 for free or will have to pay for it. It's possible Microsoft may say something about this during their event in January.

If it's going to be a free upgrade there's no harm in buying 8/8.1 now, if it's going to be paid there really is little point buying 8/8.1 at this late stage.

Need to get windows for my iMac, for software that will only run on windows, thank you for all the info, have an old pc which has stopped working hopefully this will get me through.

That's the point of the statement by PigletsDaddy, many people still regard 8 as a downgrade to 7.

Vista was craps cost people who installed it .to upgrade their hardware to get it too work so a lot stayed with co Fact!

Really! So *any* app that I want to install that does not come from the Windows Store cannot be installed?
Well, let's see, that would be all of my applications.

In all honesty Windows 8 is not the greatest OS, I have had numerous colleagues and friends ask for me to clean install Windows 7 back on their machines because the GUI is not to everyone's taste.

No, it really isn't. It is the best OS that MS have released to date. Fact.
I honestly recommend any haters do the following:

1) Install Win 8.1
2) Download Classic Shell
3) Enjoy the best OS Microsoft has released to date (fastest and most secure).

Sadly it got an undeserved bad press - because Microsoft made one tiny (but big) mistake - replacing the start menu with the start screen. Once that mistake has been corrected with classic shell - its really, really good.

In that case It also depends how much the upgrade costs vs having to buy the full windows10.
If you have 7 and the win8 to 10upgrade costs £40 but a fresh license costs £120, you're better off buying this now as you'll be £40 better off buying both upgrades. (Assuming no 7 - 10 upgrade). You'll also be in a better position to upgrade as win7 > win8 > win10 is likely to be an easier upgrade path than win7 > win10

I believe that was sarcasm...

As I've said in other threads Windows 8 is a great OS. It's fast and secure.

Those who moan about it usually haven't even used it, they just repeat what they have read in some tech articles.

Some people must also think it's cool to hate Windows 8.

RT preview? What's that all about?

I bet Win 10 will end up being a glossed-over Windows 8.1 (with a start menu)

Much the same as Win 7 was a glossed-over Windows Vista SP2 (though nobody wants to admit it)
Vista SP2 pretty much cured 90% of vistas issues, but it came too late as Win 7 was on the horizon and it already had too much negative publicity.

Isn't Windows 10 going to be free to home users?

I'm not saying to buy this or not - other than don't buy just to upgrade beyond 8.1

Love windows 8. So efficient, even more so than Apples Mac OS IMO
The haters are people who can't accept change.

Microsoft have pretty-much already confirmed that W10 will be a free upgrade for W8 users.

Pleeeease don't let this thread descend into the "My OS is better than yours" dribble. Theres millions of other places on the web for that stuff. Keep on topic? Can you buy it cheaper elsewhere?

Totally agree with what you have said. Yes Windows 8.1 without classic shell is a big pain, but once you get the start menu back its no different (looks wise) to how windows 7 looks.

Have been running windows 8.1 for the past 6 months or so - never looked back

Nope... the technical preview is great. It's a lot like W8 to look at in some places, but it's a whole lot better to use all-round. There are some things that people have been missing since moving to W8, and some new features.

Windows 10 is pretty much Windows 8 with a start menu. If you look at the design of Windows 10, it's very similar to W8.

It's not confirmed. They may offer it as a cheap upgrade even. Until I hear it from one of their press conferences or from the CEO themselves, I will remain slightly doubtful.

8.1 is fantastic, don't be scared, it's even nicer with classic shell.

I am not a windows hater, I have used most versions from 3.1 onwards, I use windows xp, Win7 and 8.1 but I do honestly prefer Win 7 to all of them. TBH I don't see much point upgrading from 7 to 8 then having to use classic shell to make it look like Ver 7! I might be persuaded to try W 10 when it is released.

That's in reference to Windows 8 RT

Win 8 is ok but for ease of use I would stick with win 7 unless you have a touchscreen. I have win 8 myself on a touchscreen and win 7 on a desktop pc.

Good price but can't see a reason to go from win 8 from 7; I can though from vista or xp....but seems this is a 7 to 8 only upgrade.
