I’ve always found the lettering fascinating. Particular how inconsistent the sizings are in ‘Hobbit’ and yet it looks so *right*.

I read a forum post not long ago about a LOTR 4K remaster and they said although the live action was shot in 4K, all of the CGI was not. They would have to redo all of the special effects for them to do a 4K remaster so I doubt it's going to happen. At least we're getting a new Middle Earth TV show from Amazon set prior to The Hobbit.

Almost no film has its visual effects rendered in 4K - most films will likely have their VFX rendered at 2K and, depending on how good it is, it may be imperceptible to the rest of the footage.

I'm waiting for the 4k edition!
Hot if you are willing to pay this much....

I think a 2k / 4k release will happen at some point for lotr, as there will be lots of money to be made from it! Game of thrones season one is now available in 4k for pre-order at Zavvi for the same price as this boxset!
Question for those in the know: Is this THE definitive boxset to be getting? Been out of the blu-ray buying game (at least regularly) for a couple of years now, what with the advent of having so much high quality streaming content on tap!

Only pick up blu-rays on special editions/good deals on treasured titles and boxsets really. Am sure there are a lot of people out there that are in a similar boat!

Would really like to have a nice Tolkien boxset, though.. Thanks!

I would say this is the definitive edition as it has 30 discs, extended editions of all the films and loads of bonus features. Read the reviews on Amazon.
Great price! Bought..
sooo tempted; but may just wait for 4K

I would say these are reference quality discs. I have the individual box sets of which this is a collection and the production values are second to none. For an a/v spectacle I can’t think of anything better. I do like streaming services BUT they do appear less detailed, stable and the sound is nowhere near as good as blu Ray. I’ve got a nice amp and speakers set up and Blu-Ray is the only way to go. 4K will be nice but I’ll only update a few of my collection once I’ve upgraded my player. The only one I’m tempted by is the Oppo 205 as that will be a big upgrade from my Marantz UD7007.

You will have to buy the Oppo soon, as they are going to stop making players.

Really? A new TV show 😃
6 films and 30 discs. Is it multiple discs per film (i.e. you need to change mid-film) or just different versions and extra features?

That’s the listings on the back of the box. 12 of the 30 discs are DVDs. Looks like The Hobbit is the theatrical version and the LOTR films are extended versions.

You don't miss out then, because while the extended versions of LOTR make a fantastic difference - the Hobbit trilogy by comparison makes very little difference whether you watch the theatrical or extended versions. No where near the same amount of additional footage with the scenes making hardly any difference to the film. The Hobbit extended versions are pretty much superfluous.

Not sure where you're looking? Under each of the Hobbit trilogy titles it says Extended Edition (apart from under An Unexpected Journey where there's a typo!!)
Maybe hot if this was UHD. Over £7 per film for now-old movies that are readily available on demand for free or on terrestrial TV is not hot in my opinion.

So tell me this world where on demand is free? Also good luck getting the quality of the blu ray releases with on demand or on terrestrial TV unless you're watching on a 32inch Kodak.

Okay fair comment. The quality of blu ray is unsurpassed. At this price, I would still wait for the uhd version, which incidentally has the blu ray as separate disk.
But I can understand why you would want this box set especially now with the 15 Percent code
Cheers op...hobbit at this price...ordered ta.

I've got a 4k setup but could be a long wait for those because I don't think they've been confirmed yet. But having never seen the extended editions myself I thought I might as well bite at this price.

I did not see the film's originally at cinemas then I watched extended as I wondered what the hype was about. Having seen the standard blu rays 18 months ago as they were like a fiver for the trilogy, I am now prepared to wait until they come out on UHD blu ray. That and the matrix and gladiator.
