My daughter is a student medical doctor and she has no idea how to connect speakers.

Be sure to check if she's learnt how if you ever see her at your GP.

At least you edited your post to post some vaguely useful information.

Never heard so much rubbish in my life, yes a good quality cable is always nice but to spend £150 to make them sound good? No.

They're passive speakers, you need an amp
Amazing price for these
Good price.

So I'd only need an amp and nothing more to get me started? Anyone have any student budget recommendations pls?

for the price you probably won't get better. you will need an amp with the right connections to allow the relevant devices to attach.

And add speaker wire.
Realistically speaking you want something to plug straight into for general everyday use I would suggest getting a decent sound bar with Bluetooth capability.
I've got a similar set of speakers running through an amp. But I hardly use it as I find my Bluetooth speakers much more easier and convenient.
But then again each to their own.....
These come highly recommended. I have a pair of these. As well as sounding amazing, they look very trendy too.

Thanks and yes, I am a student. It's amazing what you can learn at school (_;). I've never had separates and needed to know about inputs specifically for smartphones.

I'd recommend something like the yamaha as301 or 501 if you can stretch, otherwise onkyo a 9010 is amazing at the price

If you were looking for an av receiver meaning an amp which would allow you to run the speakers for TV sound aswell as music, a cheap but quality option would be a yamaha rx-381

Lots of ways to connect to an amp. Most modern ones support dlna, airplay with RCA/phono connectors and even usb support for ipod/iphones.
Cracking deal
Is it worth upgrading to these if I have Tannoy F3 speakers?
Speaker reviews seem to have allot in common with fine wine reviews in my view.

First step to being a student is learning how to research things - especially for a medical student.
There's probably a slim chance that anyone had/has these old speakers that are in my setup but I'm wondering if they would be an upgrade or not changing to these? They came as part of a full setup I bought off gumtree, the amp, cd player and tuner are Arcam Alpha 7/8's.

Soundbar........ What a load of tosh, the fidelity from this is increfible, a soundbar isn't in the same league.
Will these go ok with my 7.1 system? I'm after some new speakers for the front . Currently have some thx with titanium tweets but they are old.
I have these running off an Onykyo Av, can confirm they are very heavy, good quality, sound is crisp, bass is deep and treble is clear. I have a mission sub also but these produce more than enough bass, I barely use the sub

How about a small amp with a Chromecast Audio, or Echo Dot?

No, you need an amplifier as well, ideally an AV Receiver.

That is true too, but isn't it usually quicker to find out yourself. I'm a student too, if there's anything I want to learn about, or understand, I can usually find out much quicker by just searching for it and understanding myself. I like to read a lot of different information before buying something or figuring out how best to do something, reading someone else's solution isn't usually the best way of doing something.

So she can go online and find it in 10 seconds, other way it's just laziness. To be smart is not about education is about how to find information you need and how to use that information. This is time of information if you like it or not, there is simply too much to remember. Mr. Google, uncle Youtube and strange friend Facebook are family of future gen.

Those speakers are classics. I'd definitely keep them unless you're only seeking considerably more bass.....
