Mobile contract Discounts for but not limited to NHS staff and other offers you may not know about

Found 18th Jan 2014
I have worked for the NHS for nearly ten years and in the last couple of years I have become aware of discounts that NHS staff can get on certain services, some are good, some are not so good and some are downright great.

The discounts for mobile phone contracts are not limited to NHS staff, however they are limited to the particular providers list of corporate partners, and they vary from provider to provider. I will try to list the companies that I am aware participate in these schemes however as I have set this thread up mainly as an NHS staff thread I will be focussing on the discounts provided to those staff.

I have taken some time to find out the list of available benefits for Staff employed by the NHS and am now passing on this information, a lot of the information has been gleaned from various websites, forums and my own finding over the years. I hesitate to call this a mega thread however the list is all that I am aware of. I realise that this will not be of use to everybody, however as the nation’s biggest employer it will surely help some and that is the reason for this post.

Please don't vote cold simply because the discount does not apply to you, or if your vote is based on any political agenda (pensions etc.). Some of the companies (e.g. Vodafone) even allow you to add up to five of your friends and family members for the discount and are not exclusive to NHS staff; however for the benefit of this post I am focussing mainly on the NHS discounts provided. The other participating companies for mobile discounts can be found in post #2.

Remember to always ask retailers and always carry some form of NHS employment id, you never know.

There are websites that specifically deals with discounts for service staff including, but not limited to:
healthservicediscounts.com (formerly nhsdiscounts)
bluelightcard.com (all emergency services)
psdiscounts.com (all public sector employees)

However this is not ideal for me and doesn't seem to list discounts that they do not get affiliate links for, therefore in the real world I have found that it hasn't been much use to me. They do however offer discount on gift cards for most major retailers, saving up to 10% on purchases if you have the foresight to purchase them in advance. I’m not including deals on these websites as they are all quite easy to find, the information I am offering isn’t commonly posted together and most of my colleagues are unaware of them.

I have taken quite a lot of time to find out the list of available benefits for Staff employed by the NHS and am now passing on this information

I am hoping that others may also know some information that I don't and that we can create a pool of information that will help others out.

Links in the first post due to not allowing direct links in the top post.

CHILDCARE

Computershare (formerly Busybees) offer a scheme where you can pay for nursery fees directly from your pay prior to income tax being deducted meaning you save paying tax on the payments for childcare (you will need to speak to you HR advisor with regards to this)

(thanks to adi0604) Most nurseries would accept Childcare payments (formerly vouchers). Which is bought by employer from service providers. Employer deducts the cost (upper limit applies) from gross salaries of employee and saves NI on it.
This scheme is due to change in 2015 to a system slightly less beneficial to the employee, it has to do with the way tax is deducted from your salary.

Childcare:

Childcare voucher people would charge service fee but oppose to saving NI cost employers saves around 5%..

good effort. should help some if not all.

Massive thanks. Sharing now .

With mobile phones it can be a pain because you are really on a business contract and they can actually put your contract up at any time

Do you know if this applies to student nurses?

thanks, I just got an EE upgrade and never knew they offer 10-20% discount for asda colleagues, do you know how do I claim this?

The link for public sector is wrong in #1 it should be psdiscounts.com - thanks for taking the time and effort for these I'm sure it will benefit a lot of people

Smith and Jones Pubs give 30% off food for NHS workers.
Their Big Eat & 2 for 1 pizzas after 2pm make the food exceptionally cheap.
Add the discount for CAMRA members on the drinks and you have a quality food and drink at a great price.

Highly recommend them.

Most childminders accept these vouchers too.

thank you so much, very very helpful, from nurse Cooper :-)

Capgemini gets 20% off at EE

If I'm a volunteer at a hospital, would I be eligible for some of the offers, particularly nandos, Jimmy's and the other restaurants? Do you just say NHS discount at the till or?

Quite a few good responses, thanks guys. I hope this thread can help people save some money and also hopefully build into a useful resource for NHS staff, I just wish this had been done years ago so i could have benefitted then.

If you have an NHS branded id card then you are good to go.

I do have a volunteers photo ID with NHS on it etc. I'm just worried that they would see volunteer and reject it?

You can but try, in my experience I have never had more than a cursory glance from an underpaid assistant (in fact with domino's when I mention it on the phone I am very rarely asked to provide proff when collecting).

The NHS discounts also apply to third sector workers as long as your ID badge has the NHS logo

brilliant post thank you :-)

Thank you for this OP. Just to let you know, the National Express link seems to be expired when you go to search for coaches.

Than you for using all your time this I very helpful, to a lot of people including myself who works for nhs x

O2 Open has changed (we get it through a corporate discount). It's only valid for the newer 'Refresh' tariffs, and therefore it's 30% off the line rental portion, and nothing off the handset portion (airtime plan vs phone plan).

Quite useful thank you op for you're efforts

On EE this is applicable to Orange Brand only. Not T Mobile or 4GEE (20%) perk and selected handsets as listed.

As long as your badge says NHS as a logo, your fine to get the discount. I used to work for the Arcadia group and it was fine

twittwoo32

Do you know if this applies to student nurses?

No it doesn't, only for people employed by the NHS. But all is not lost as you should have your NUS card for discounts.

Thanks for all your hard work OP, I've worked for the NHS for 14 years and didnt realise you could get discounts!

just so u know not all dominos will do the NHS delivery 25% off. also I dont think burtons give nhs either but it at dorothy perkins!

Yes you would, just show your NHS ID before making payment they should give you 20% off

The O2 discount seems only valid when you go via a shop but the Vodafone discount you can apply for after you have ordered via a cashback site...this reduced my £20 month sim contract to effectively £6

Good to see the NHS personnel getting some gratitude, they do an outstanding job

twittwoo32

Do you know if this applies to student nurses?

If you have an NHS card it works, at least in Nando's. I'm a med student, and use my NHS card all the time even though it says 'Student' on the card.

Yes that's correct only t mobile and not ee

Thanks for posting

Anyone know if there are similar deals for Mobile Phone for Council Employees?

thanks a lot for the great post. many will benefit. having said that all these are at the discretion of the guy behind the till. i have been turned away at several nandos, subways and topshops. they say they have the right to refuse anyone any discounts. they dont even give an explanation.

Best to ask your local shops in your local town. We had the O2 discount due to a massive number of handsets within the company, but even when we swapped to Voda, O2 kept on the corporate offer. I think the EE shops in town also offer something like 20% discount when you show your work ID even though it's not advertised/they're not partnered with our firm, so it's worth an ask.

THANKS.
