About this deal

**Edit: Black now unavailable but walnut still available. See link in description and comments below.**

I was in the market for some decent budget bookshelf speakers and saw these on offer at Hughes. They retail at £300 and most other places have them for £269. I rang Richer Sounds to see if they would price match, and they said they would, but they only have the walnut finish in stock and I wanted black, so I've gone with Hughes instead. They arrive on Thursday! I couldn't find a great many reviews, but the ones that are out there are all positive; these are a bargain at full price, apparently, so at £160 I'll take my chances. They look pretty smart, too, I think. Hughes are also doing the matching Dolby Atmos upwards-firing speakers on a discount, which I'm quite tempted by...

Anyway, hopefully this helps anyone else who's looking for some new speakers to bring in the new year

Are these passive? Do I need an amp with them?

Have a look at the Amp HATs on a Rasberry pi. I've got a JustBoom AMP with built in DAC running a set of Q2020i speakers, this was in our main bedroom before we moved, it sounded amazing. This setup will now be going in my workshop.

This can't be used with a PC can it?

Not unless you have the PC connected to an amp first and then to these speakers.

That's a shame. They're still showing as in stock for delivery with my postcode (south west). Have you tried the ones in the walnut finish?

Could you drive them from a Sony stereo system to replace the Sony speakers ? Hope that's not a silly question

depends on the speaker connections on the back of the stereo

Good for turntables? How do these compare to these? hmv.com/sto…ers

The Edifier that you linked are active speakers, these are passive.

Depends on if you have an amp or a phono stage in your turntable? If you do, active speakers are fine, if not, you'll need a phono stage and then an amp to drive the signal created by your turntable.

These arrived today! Very quick delivery from Hughes and DPD. They seem great so far - very smart and sound good - but I haven't had a chance to put them through their paces yet. I didn't realise that they had four terminals each, so I might have a go at bi-wiring them.
