You could say this is one of the greatest comedies ever, but the Monty Python team said it first! Life of Brian is all about (and here's the big surprise) the life of Brian, who was born in a Bethlehem manger next door to Jesus. Three wise men believe he is the messiah, but it becomes apparent that he is only Brian.

It's written and performed by the Monty Python lads, so you know what you're in for; if you don't, put this disc down and go out while it's safe!

Commentary with Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle and Terry Jones
Commentary with John Cleese and Michael Palin
Brand new hour-long documentary "The Story of Brian"
An illustrated recording by the Pythons of their early screenplay in progress
5 Deleted Scenes: 'Shepherds, 'The Sign That is The Sign', 'Otto', 'Pilate's Wife' and 'The Souvenir Salesman'
Original Radio Ads featuring John Cleese's mother, Eric Idle's mother, Terry Gilliam's mother and Michael Palin's dentist

I bought this fairly recently (in fact I paid about the same price over a year ago) and watched it for the first time in years and didn't find it half as funny as when it first came out. In fact I can't seem to get through it again.

For me The Holy Grail is much better. Better scenes, direction, acting and just overall a hell of a lot funnier.

How does this compare to the Criterion Edition ?

And RedOnRed, it's still bloody funny, and 10 times better than Grail. I can't understand why you think that of the direction.

Maybe you have to have come from a Catholic upbringing to find it funny.....

Was just about to ask the same - I have the Criterion - is this a better buy???

A pretty much completely unreligious upbringing actually.

I also think Holy Grail is a lot funnier although its pretty weak at the end. Still love Life of Brian though. My favourite scene is where Brian goes up in the spacecraft and crashes back where he started. Love that scene.

That's from The Meaning Of Life isn't it?

You lucky, lucky *******!

What, I can't even write "bars tard" without being censored? What sort of $%^& is that ?

This film came out during the new wave/punk era and was great at the time. I think a lot of this films appeal was the controversy it raised at the time. All of that has completely mellowed and now the dust's settled about 29 years later it just all feels pretty dated and tired to me. That's the jokes and direction. I've just got too many other comedy DVD's i'd rather watch.
