Moto E 2nd Gen black on PAYG Vodafone - £35

Cheap and cheerful 4G (Snapdragon 410 quadcore CPU), 1GB RAM, 8 GB ROM + microSD card slot, unlocking codes are from £1.28 on ebay.
Official MM OS update is available as well.

To buy without a mandatory top-up:

There is a 'Keep Existing SIM' option at the bottom of the 'Bundles' page, which allows you to purchase a PAYG phone without a top-up. Unfortunately Vodafone now hides this button a few seconds after the page has loaded. You have to be quick to click the button, if you miss it simply hit F5 or the 'Refresh' button on your browser to reload the 'Bundles' page and try again.

- chancooluk

Buy it by phone browser. No need to play with f5
- madscientis

To buy without phone browser/F5 nonsense:

Select "Choose Phone" to add it to your basket

When presented with the list of bundles, click "Basket" > "Go to basket" at the top

Wow. Surprised this has gone even lower. It was rated the second best budget smartphone after the Smart Ultra 6 which has hardly been under £100. Hot

* PC Advisor's list of best budget smartphones has been updated to include newer models since I last saw it when the Moto E 2015 was at number 2. It's now their number 5, but definitely still the best value price wise

you had me at unlocking codes

I use one as my daily phone, I've had no complaints with it. I've used kevinlow82 on ebay for moto codes a few times, they've all worked and they're only £1.28

any ideas how to avoid having to pay the additional £10 top up ??

this or ee rook mobile phone?

Some people have said to right click and inspect on the page, there is a hidden option of keep existing sim. You need to find said item and then add a display:block.

Not the easiest unless you've done this for website building.

Details in the original post (it took me a number of attempts but with the mouse cursor hovered in the right place and some rapid F5 refreshing and clicking I got there in the end!). Thanks OP.

Use "keep existing sim" option when ordering online, use mobile version of Voda site.

thanks guys

Bargain. I paid this much for the first gen when Amazon had it on offer ages ago.
Apparently this has/will get Marshmallow according to Motorola's upgrade page. Can anyone confirm? I did fancy the Moto G 3rd Gen for £90 but can't grumble at this.

had a go on this as a back up, great little phone. had the 1st gen.

also, they are crafty hiding the keep existing sim button.

Its got Marshmallow now

Its a great phone with great battery - I had a play with it & then sold to a friend - He gets 4-5 days with minimal use

Most people could get 2 days moderate use - Good battery and low resolution help things - Very responsive just lacks camer flash and compass for sat nav but still very useable

thanks was looking for a cheap second phone

is this 4g?

Wow a bargain...

Brilliant price. I picked up a brand new one unlocked from ebay for £50 a month ago and thought it was a bargain. Absolutely brilliant phone for that price.

To buy the phone without the topup (£35), go to the 'Choose your Big Value Bundle' step, then right click anywhere and 'View page source', then ctrl+f for ''Keep your existing SIM", then click on the URL directly above that text.

Is this much worse than the moto g?

Thanks, ordered

Moto E is a great budget phone, and you don't have to worry about suspicious Chinese update software embedded into the OS. It's solid at what it does too, pretty snappy for a budget phone.

This is the phone you get while patiently saving up for the premium handset you always wanted, or the phone you recommend to a first time smartphone user to help them get into new technology without the financial risk. My mum hates technology, but now she's listening to mp3s and texting like a boss thanks to this thing.

Yes, but for £35 its worth the money.

Here is a comparison against the moto g 3rd gen which is just under £100 i think in some places

gsmarena.com/com…247

you get loads more in the moto g, processor, ram and storage (if you can get the 16gb / 2gb ram model), screen, camera.

but for £35 this will give you a decent phone for day to day use

How can you tell it's the 2nd gen?

If you're on Chrome (or any decent browser) on Windows hit F12 and paste the following into the console and hit enter:

$(".similar-products").show();

Great way to hide things Vodafone!

Front facing camera.

worst case, unlock and sell to cex for £45, making just under a tenner.

What if the picture is wrong? There is no info ti suggest this is a 2nd Gen.

There's a tick next to front facing camera in the specification.

thank you for this great deal.

Ta OP - ordered

Can't go wrong with a 4g phone running MM for that price. But surely it will be sluggish on MM as my moto g 3rd gen was not brilliant tbh.

Bought, as previous poster says, all you have to do is right click, view page source, CTRL + F, type in "Keep existing vodafone sim" then click on the extra long URL directly below - it will move you on to the next page and add the phone without a sim to your basket. Bought, many thanks OP. needed a phone for a hot spot purposes.

Bargain! But the bar stewards insist on running a credit check so you can have one.

Regarding the lack of compass, am I to assume this means that when using a maps app, you can't turn around and have the map follow your turn?

Essentially the phone can use GPS to work out where you are, just doesn't know which way you're facing.

Yes - Exactly as you say - The phone wont follow you turning around

Can you put memory card in this would the phone come with charger and cable earphones and accessories is it 8gb memory and easy way to unlock thanks

Great bedtime phone, only one that doesn't give me eyestrain (screen size and type I guess). I just use it on WiFi.

Great battery, good front facing speaker, takes sd card, brilliant device for the money, (though I would not use as a main phone, a bit jumpy sometimes).

Thanks OP. Bought one for the wife to replace an aging T-Mobile Vivacity that's dying on it's feet. Was going to treat her to the Huawei P9 Lite but Vodafone put it back up to full price this morning and put the kibosh on that idea. Back up plan was to get the Lenovo K5 from Argos but wifey took exception to the fact that the buttons weren't backlit. Given the fact that she only really needs a mobile to make the occasional phone call, this is perfect!!

Thanks for the post. Ordered for hubby. He did mention he wanted a new phone. I think he said samsung but this'll do. Beggars can't be choosers!
