Seems like a good find - 5000mAh battery, 3GB RAM, metal body and up-to-date near stock Android. I think it's also dual-SIM from Motorola direct?

It has a 5000mAh battery in it, how thin did you think it would be? And it probably is slow compared to an iPhone 7/8 or S7/8, but fine in its own right.

My mum's got one, she's always complaining about it. Fingerprint reader is slow, notifications get stuck even if cleared away (requires a restart), it freezes a lot, the cameras are rubbish, it cuts off calls all the time, signal is noticeably poorer than other phones on the same network.... The list goes on.

Don't get swayed by the 3GB RAM. It's paired with a very mediocre CPU and GPU, so you don't really see any benefit from the extra RAM, it's always slow even if the apps are still in memory.

Only get this phone for the large battery. Otherwise there are better options available.

What are the better options? I'm looking for a dedicated satnav phone for the car, this seems to tick the boxes, especially with the large battery?
I've got this phone, never had any issues with it freezing or anything like that, yes it's not as polished or fast as better devices, it works well as a sat nav used it with Google maps and here the other day, I would have liked it too be louder as I use it for time in radio an bt sport app, the big battery is main reason to buy this phone, not yet had to worry about lasting a day and now often charge it every other day, no issues with phone calls either

I'd be wary if you are going to use it as a sat nav, check with someone who has one how good the GPS is.
Between my wife and I we've got the moto E1, E2 & E3. The 1&2 work fine as sat navs but the 3 is useless, always losing the GPS signal then thinking you are 200m off the motorway and giving you directions to get back on it usually just when you need it.
It is not just our E3, my friend & his wife both have them and exactly the same.
This phone or this one on Amazon, Which would be the better option guys?

If you like regular updates look elsewhere.
Moto now Lenovo ask any Moto X owner been waiting 12 months for A7 and still nothing.
Message is don't buy Motorola on its previous reputation for updates now rubbish.
Bought this phone recently from John Lewis for £139 and returned it after a couple of days use. The battery is good but that's about it to be honest.

The screen is poor even for a 720p, fingerprint scanner is slow and doesn't unlock the phone consistently and the biggest issue I had was using it for simple videos. Mine couldn't handle Youtube, Instagram or snapchat, I would get constant frame drops when watching videos in Youtube and horrible green flickering when using the other two apps. I'm far from a phone snob but would expect a phone in this price range to be able to handle a few videos at 720p HD! Not 100% sure if I got a duff unit but wasn't willing to waste my time asking for a replacement. Read some reviews about video playback issues due to the slow chip it uses.

Reason I went for this budget phone was the NFC for android pay and the fingerprint scanner but the rest of the device is unusable for me. If you can live without andriod pay I'd go for the Moto G5/G5S Plus or even the Moto G4/G4 Plus. All have full 1080 screens and run much better!

Its not a duff unit. The problem with HD video capture and playback also affects other Moto's using the MT6737 chipset (E4, C Plus).

Try watching a 720p60 video on YouTube, the frame rate will keep tanking to around 5fps every 10 seconds or so.

The Vodafone Smart N8 (which uses the same chipset) also has issues with HD video capture and playback.

I agree with regards to the G5 series and G4 series being better than the E4 Plus.

Another solid choice is the Vodafone Smart V8, which is fully featured (includes NFC, compass), has great build quality, a high quality screen, and significantly better cameras (although still not great in low light). It's a bit more expensive though, and obviously locked to Vodafone (unlock codes are about £1.30 on eBay).

I have to second your opinion unfortunately. Motorola/Lenovo aren't even releasing regular security updates - let alone full Android version upgrades - for anything but their newer "premium" tier phones. 😑

Moto originally promised Nougat and Oreo updates for the Moto G4 and Plus. A couple of weeks ago they removed all traces of the promise from their websites. Unfortunately for them it was spotted and plastered all over tech websites, so they have reversed the decision to cancel the rollout of Oreo, citing their original promise as a "mistake" (otherwise known as a lie).

However, they are only going to release Oreo for the G4 Plus, despite the normal G4 being almost identical.

Don't expect any updates for the E4 series. The E3 never received an update.

I've ordered the 64GB Global from banggood when it was on offer last week, still on back order as of now but took the NFC hit as it's a much better spec phone for less pennies.

Also from my past experience Motorola customer service and repairs are terrible, sent the wife's G4 Play off to fix the GPS signal only for it to be sent back with no feedback and nothing fixed! Ended up fixing it myself by opening the phone up and doing a small tweak to the hardware as advised on the XDA forums! Would rather order from China and have a better phone for cheaper, build quality will probs be better and last over a year anyway. Worth it imo.

Yes I did but have now seen the rest of the relevant post saying to go for a g5 over this. Thank you
It's just after skim reading :

I just presumed rest of their post would of been listing more faults with the handset, so I scrolled on down.

The Moto G was an easy choice in the past. My whole family have Moto G, Moto E and Moto X Plays... mainly the latter. I am not bothered about having the latest operating system - Nougat or whatever. I just want a phone that works - and ideally good camera and GPS. I have been looking for a phone for around £100 for a friend and have still decided to risk a Moto G4 - it seems the G5 is not better and in fact worse in some cases. The Xiaomi phones are tempting but he needs the phone ASAP as his screen has broken - plus I would be reluctant to recommend someone a phone with virtually no warranty.

I have to agree surely if you buy a phone it is just that a phone and the G4 camera is excellent.
When Android updates it is often imperceptible to the user as to what exactly has changed just my thoughts
Does this is a dual sim phone?

Agree with what you've said - in fact, seems Motorola has gone downhill since Lenovo took it over as much as I hate to say it, it was better under it's own management and Google's. I also wouldn't bother recommending any phone to anyone, it's a fool's errand, never any thanks and all you ever hear is what's wrong with it even if you didn't get it for them.
Not for me thanks, battery, good size, ram, healthy amount. camera, hmm, could be good. processor, no no no. way too slow and too less cores for that price.
Let's be honest this phone isn't going to be for everyone.

I've been using it for about a month now, and here are the issues I've had.

The finger print sensor doesn't always work first time but is still useable.
The 720p screen isn't the best for the size but once again is useable.
The camera is decent with the right exposure for a quick snap, but not exceptional.
And the overall performance isn't the fastest.

But for day to day use of messaging and calling and browsing the internet with some simple game usage it works perfectly.

To top this off the battery life is incredible, I couldn't go back to a smaller battery now, I can easily get two full days of useage and more with light useage.

I wanted to buy the P2 but it's not too easy to get, seems to be like an upgraded E4 plus with better screen and processor.
