I have this phone , and it's pretty good , apart from the camera . It's struggles to focus properly when you try to take photos close up ?

Maybe it's defective and should be repaired or replaced under warranty?

Pointless getting this when the Moto x4 can currently be had for less with a much better spec.

I have this phone too and I find the camera quite poor. I don't think there's anything wrong with it per se, it's just not great!

It's not that much better spec - the x4 has a faster processor, other than that there's not that much difference. I think with the G5S you're paying for the "premium" finish, with the all metal body etc which is quite nice. I suspect in every day use they are much of a muchness. One aspect the x4 has is better LTE band coverage if you travel a lot. I have the G5S and it's not much use for getting 4G in the USA and Canada.

I also had one of these, camera is actually good but lacks much colour. Performance is good and build etc but the vibrate alert is super rattly and noisy

The X4 is still a definitely better spec: dual cameras, ip68 testing, usb c charging, more premium build, and from what I hear likely a better quality screen panel, I think higher maxium SD storage... And it's cheaper making this redundant unless you need dual SIM.

And the CPU is a big step up, with the CPU in the g5s a primary source of criticism of the phone in many reviews

What's the best X4 deal currently? Any chance of a link if you've got one handy?
I already posted it on here, could be as little as £109.99, worst case scenario is £174.99

I think I found it: hotukdeals.com/dea…620
I have an ageing Moto X which is on its last legs and I have been waiting for the G6 to come out but the sub £200-prices for the G5S and X4 are tempting

that's the one...little more faff to get it really quite a lot cheaper, but not much faff to get it slightly cheaper. Seems a no-brainer to me unless you have to have dual SIM.
Just picked up the Moto X4 from Carphone Warehouse at lunchtime. It may be no flagship phone but for the price it is excellent value and much better than my old X Play. The phone immediately updated to Android Oreo

Actually, you're right - the 4X has quite a nice premium finish having seen it up close now. It's a good looking phone.
Now £149.00

The Moto G5S has a 16MP camera and the Moto X4 has 12MP. I see it being said that the X4 is better, does the higher MP count not always mean a better camera? I'm clueless about this stuff and getting lost in phone specs

The only inherent benefit higher MP - beyond a certain minimum - has is that you can clip the photo more or digital zoom more (which is basically the same thing) without pixellation. In fact 12mp can allow a bigger pixel size which can produce better quality pictures in conditions such as lower light if done well. You'll see that a lot of flagship phones have pixel counts around 12mp with the exception only of Sony really.
