Honda...best engines for mowers

Got the Honda izy, mighty fine machine

This doesn't seem too different to their current F1 engine!

Excellent mower. I have one and it's never let me down in the nine years I've had it.

I'm not going to anything bad about Honda petrol engines but Briggs & Stratton aren't exactly bad either.

Honda all the way for me but how many slabs could you buy for this money?

VTEC YO!

Steel deck though. If you're spending this much on a lawnmower you really need a rust proof aluminium deck. Any decent engine will outlast a steel deck.

Personally I think this is over priced, I'm sure all the Honda fan boys will rant on about how good they and in sure they are right but is it worth double the cost of the competition? In my opinion no, I bought a makita propelled briggs and Stratton powered mower 8 years ago and paid £169 at the time. The Honda powered models were more than twice the price. Ive done nothing to my mower either, is had fuel and oil and that's it. No other maintenence.

Wont leave stripes on lawn though

Good engine, good mower but nothing that special about the price.

Only things I'd want that this doesn't have is a mulching function and an aluminium deck.
That adds to the cost of course.

I like the Honda engine part, however Mountfield are not what they were. Now made in Italy and designed very cheaply.

I purchased one a few years back & have had various problems. In particular the wheels are cheap and nasty, running on plain bushes which wear out. Also had to repair one of the height adjusters.
The engine tried to detach itself from the deck several times.

Roo's comment about a steel deck is spot on. I painted the underside of my mower with 2 layers of hammerite and one layer of underseal when it was brand new. It is stored in the garage. Rust is still starting around the edges.
My mower runs for less than half an hour for maybe 36 weeks a year. 18 hours a year max.
That's like the equivalent of driving my car 900 miles. With such easy use, these products should be engineered to last at least 20 years -so it should be either an aluminium or a galvanised deck.

Is there really such a thing as a lawnmower fanboy..?

It would appear so.
BTW. I still have 30 year old mountfield, tecumseh motor, aluminium deck. Very occasional oil change, original spark plug (must change it) still going.
ps. Never professionally serviced.

Sorry. Stopped reading after "I still have...".

My Mountfield / Briggs has started hunting.

Should have carried on-it's fascinating stuff.

Get a carb kit off the bay for about a fiver and it'll be fine.

VTEC loosely translates into Baseball Cap in English.

Honestly they give gun licenses to anyone nowadays!

GCV 160 is the ubiquitous budget engine - its not all that great tbh. Having torn down quite a few of them the quality is not normal Honda and they also suffer problems with the auto choke / throttle plate. Directly comparable to your average briggs.

99% dirty carb jets or throttle linkage. Easy fix

Thought the same but I hit a stone which went through the side of my Alu deck. Wish I had an easy to weld steel deck now.

Think this is a bit pricey though as paid around the same for my now holed brand name Alu deck model from a small independent and given the recent very cheap Quailcast deal with B&S engine. Would advise pricing small independents to see if they will price match/beat to keep them in business since they will be eventually needed for the eventual breakdowns.
Not voting either way.

Remove the plastic drive belt cover from a steel deck mower that has rusted through and you find that the deck is fine where the cover has protected it.

If the cover protected the whole deck then it wouldn't rust through.

Is there anyone out there that can make plastic covers? There’s a market just waiting for your product.

I have a 15yo Briggs and Straton which I bought at Homebase for £110. Its only been serviced once - last year (by me). Im no mechanic but rather than replace it or pay someone else, I got the parts on eBay for a few quid and followed some YouTube videos. I noticed recently that they still sell the same type of motor, so they're obviously happy with the design and are built to last. The thing will probably last another 15 years!

Wouldn't touch a mower with a steel deck as grass corrodes so badly.Still have one in the shed with perfect engine but half a deck! My current plastic decked B &S powered 20"mower bought second hand (council disposal) is still perfect after 14 years-no white stress marks and doesn't need a thorough clean and oil spray after each use like the steel one did.

Yep heard enough, my 18 year old steel deck mower is being replaced by another medium priced £199 brand which will no doubt last another 15 years.........

I thought that about Briggs and Stratton - used to be the dogs b&llocks. Then I bought a Honda - absolutely no comparison, and I'd never go back to B&S.

My uncle had his Honda lawnmower for 23 years. Great engines.

rubbish. not in the same league. I had a b and s engined tiller and it wouldn't even start first time I used it, it was checked and it had seized. neighbour spends ages starting their b and s engineer mower my Honda izy starts first time every time I used it in 8 years

You must be unlucky. Provided you don't abuse them B&S engines will last for decades.

Got the Honda izy, mighty fine machine

Hi Chis - thinking about an Izy as well - what model did you go for?

I have always had aluminium decks. But good find anyway.

The cheapest I can find the steel decked 53cm Honda izzy that has exactly the same engine is £640! Nearly twice the price so I'd say this is a great deal.

I have just had my email confirmation that the order will not be processed. They offer 10% off my next online order. The code is valid until 15th June 2015. Sad times.

I rattling thankful to find this site on bing, just what I was
