I've got the SP535 model but these are still great buys and include the mulching plug.
SP = Self-propelled
HP - Hand (manual) propulsion

The cut is so much better than that I had with my old bosch electric mower, and the mulching plug has meant (apart from first cut of the season), no more gathering/emptying lawn bags.

3 year guarantee for the MOUNTFIELD SP53H which IS a HONDA engine.
2 Year Warranty for the MOUNTFIELD HP454 which has a Mountfield RM45 OHV

Oil to buy is the SA-30W for a 4-stroke engine.

Can you use this with a provisional or do you need a full license?

Got one of these last year for £180 in the summer sale, fantastic mower......by coincidence I’ve been to the petrol station today to get some fresh fuel for this year!
mine started on 2nd pull last week after being garaged over winter with a little fuel stabiliser.
Can you use this with a provisional or do you need a full license?
No mention of a Honda engine with that model.

It’s a Briggs & Stratton engine iirc

Yeah only model I recall having the Honda is the535 I think
I bought one of these with a Honda engine about 20 months ago on an ex demo in b&q, hadn’t even been started as no oil and pull start removed for safety. Was lucky enough to get it for just £120, I think these are brilliant. Love mine
Great machine!!! I used mine just today for the first cut of the season. I've the "Honda engine" one and bought from Screwfix for £350. Feel as though I've been well stung seeing these prices. On a side note: Anyone know what the best way to get rid of Leather jackets is? The birds have ripping the life out of the back yard

Really makes you realise how good the pre Christmas deals at Homebase were at £75 for a Qualcast which has a Briggs and stratton engine.

Bayer make a chemical leather jacket killer, Provado Lawn grub killer - You apply with a watering can. Or you can use a biological control, nematodes whilst effective its harder to control. Incidently they normally come about if you cut the lawn too short during the early autumn. Raise your mower a few notches before the end of the season and then the crane flys struggle to lay their eggs.

You need better reliability for your lawn cutting needs. Switch to a Renult.

Nematodes worked well for me, I applied them 5 years ago and the lawn has been clear since. I bought the 'todes from Amazon...

Lots of myths around about mower engines.

As a general rule, all of the cheap mowers are made under license in China. Whether it says Mountfield or Briggs & Stratton on the mower, it's unlikely to be one of their engines unless you buy a higher model - in the case of Mountfield, most of their higher models are outsourced to Honda too.

You can buy a premium mower and spend more money and time looking after it and getting it serviced to comply with the warranty. Or you can buy a cheap mower, keep the oil topped up, and replace it when it dies - they're often not worth fixing at these prices.
What’s wrong with Briggs and Stratton engine model.

They just aren't traditional Amercian made B&S any more. They are quite transparent about it these days though:

To be fair, China produces a lot of good quality stuff. Gone are the days when anything from China was cheap and made of plastic.

Good job as i don’t think a plastic engine would last five minutes! :-)

Most Mercedes diesels now have a Renault engine,it’s the warranty that counts....
its funny - petrol lawnmower threads are like Apple v android threads - everyone has all the info and knows whats best. Hotukdeals where everyone is right and wrong all at the same time
Got one. Had it for years. Great kit. Never let me down.
added a couple of details about the models 3 or 2 year warranty and honda or mountfield engine depending on the model chosen
Link takes you to a the HP454 not the SP53H in title? Is that right?

I've listed both models in the main listing rather than have two almost identical posts but yes, the link takes you to the 454 although clicking ont he petrol mowers link at the top, allows you to easily see the other
voted cold as the deal is still trying to pretend its a honda engined mower for £218. The honda version is £338.

The Honda engined mower is £29 off a £367 list price. Its pretty confusing to muddle this in with a non-Honda engined mower which is £91 off £309 list price.

So to add my pennies worth, I have a Honda HRD 536 QX. Alloy deck, steel roller, self propelled. They retail around £1300, but I paid £800 for mine 10 years ago.
The engine has needed several services over that time at reasonable expense, but it still runs perfectly and is probably still worth £500 ish.
The two in this deal will be worth nothing in 10 years time as the steel deck will have rotted away. Plus they don't have a roller so you wont get stripes
On the basis the Honda engine will probably outlast the chassis it is fitted to, there is not much point in paying the extra for that one. £218 seems pretty good. Hot for the deal, cold for the presentation!
If you pull a piece of carpet behind one of these mowers would it produce the stripes similar to what a roller achieves ?
honda all day still got two izy`s 20 years old
What's your thoughts on the SP555V for £599?
