Please note this offer only applies to M&S cardholders. To maximise the saving, see if your current insurer will give you a better renewal price and get them to re-send you your renewal docs through the post. Don't forget to use the usual price comparison websites too.

Blerb from M&S:

As a main M&S Cardholder, we guarantee to beat your car insurance renewal quote by at least £50. You will need to be a named driver on the policy with your address matching the motor policy address.

Get an online quote, or call us on 0800 107 1807. If our quote, on a like for like basis, doesn’t beat your renewal price with your existing car insurance provider by at least £50 then, as an M&S Cardholder, we’ll reduce the premium you pay upon purchase, so that we do beat your renewal price by £50.

like for like is the problem. If your existing policy slightly differs from the M & S one then it will not be compared.

I've seen these "like for like" clauses in T&Cs before with First Direct and Post Office who also guaranteed to beat insurance renewal and had no trouble even though my Tesco Value policy which most definitely inferior to First Direct's policy!

No insurance policy is going to be identical, they're generally only looking at excess amounts (both voluntary and compulsory) as well optional extras.

This is the clause that matters:

Your M&S Car Insurance renewal quote must be on an equivalent basis matching your current cover levels and personal details
with your existing insurer, including the voluntary excess and additional products.
