higher core clock speed and three fans (vs 2) to keep the card cooler.. the msi is clearly an entry level 1080 as MSI's more premium offerings are the gaming x and z.. i think the £2 difference here is worth it

Clock speed is irrelevant when GPU boost 3.0 exists. Three fans doesn't always mean cooler.

depends on the material of the backplate, use of thermal pads, and (most importantly) airflow in the case already. increased surface area can increase dissipation, but requires airflow to be anywhere near useful
which is why most backplates are a bad idea & also m.2 heatsinks

Pretty much all 1080's boost to the same speed (2Ghz), and 2 fans is more than adequate to cool a 1080.

i have to agree with you, if the space isn't an issue the 3 fans will run quieter than 2 fans, my 2 fan EVGA 1080ti can be relatively loud under 50% load
