Very good card.

Brilliant price.

Oooh was just about to pull the trigger on a 970 when this appears...Anyone got any real-world benchmarks of this vs a 970?

Google reviews for the 970, they compare.

Actually it comes with 4 free games, 3 from the AMD gold promotion and also Beyond earth.

When you consider that you can sell the game codes for about 40 quid this makes it makes it awesome value.

The only thing that makes it tough for me to consider over a 970 is the power consumption

Unless you're one of those 'normal' people who plays games 6hrs+ per day 7 days a week 365 days a year(according to some guy who keeps spouting on about how much extra the 290/x costs to run over the 970) then it shouldn't be a huge difference.

To be honest I would have gone with this if I did not long buy a gtx 970 this is the best 290x and overclocks like a beast

Apologies I meant PSU.. It's only 550w.

Don't forget the shipping costs.

would pick these over any 970, this is the best r9 290 for lower than a 970 plus free games

and most likely better support down the road.

The 290x just edges it in terms of perfomance but more inefficient.

I'm also looking at those 2 and maybe just plain 290. Anyone thinks it would be better to wait for the boxing day? I'm in no big rush.

many people just dont get it.

970gtx even stock ones are as fast as this use less power and are about half as hot in use.

why do you think the nvidia 970 gtxs are selling so well and 290s have dropped like rocks in prices.

this model for eg needs a 750w psu minimum !

u can run a decent 970 gtx on a good branded 400w.

as the nvidia cards get better drivers they will increase performance aswell.

you on a budget get the cheapest 290 you can for 200 or just get a 970 for 30-40 quid mre and be happy with less issues.

How do you figure the 290/290x has better support than the 970?

The free games are not a bad bonus, I certainly wouldn't let that sway me more than their actual value in resale.

The last bundled game for the 970 sold for 26, however, the last bundle with the 290x was selling at a lower price for all 4 games--20.

And, as fowler has so kindly alluded to, the operational cost, in terms of power, is higher on the 290x.

Let's not forget, 5 to 8 quid a year per average hour in cost difference. If you play 1 hour a day, it's about 6 quid, 2 hours 12 quid... Etc. So factor that into your cost comparison.

Oh, and it's really hard to ignore the most important part, the 970 is faster than the 290x.

What are you talking about? The card for sale the other day for 249.99 (Flubbit for 235) was the Gigabyte Windforce, one of the top rated cards and brands. MSI is a good brand, but so is Gigabyte.

In fact, quite a few sites consider the Gigabyte the best one available.

This is a lightening edition card, it would smash any standard 970. Do your research bro, its not just about the brand, both Gigabyte and MSI are at the top but a standard Windforce 970 is not going to compete with a lightening edition card.

Unless you're someone who's got no life and plays pc games for several hours a day for 365 days a year, the difference in the costs wouldn't amount to anywhere near the difference you keep claiming.

Well seeing as the 290/x have been out for a year not a surprise then 970 are as fast/slightly faster, also the fact that the prices of the 290/x are being reduced.
Seriously Nvidia fanboy spouting rubbish about there being issues with an AMD card, before you make yourself look stupid my claiming I'm a amd fanboy I've owned both Nvidia and amd cards and never experienced any issues with either and especially non of the apparent issues that amd cards are meant to have according to Nvidia fanboys.
Finally not everyone can justify the extra for the 970 over the £200 290 for a handful(at most) extra fps(the 970 is only really much better than the 290/x in games that Nvidia have paid the developers for).

I've always had an AMD card as they were always the best price / performance ratio..however this time i bought the MSI GTX 970 purely because:

1) High spec AMD cards Require too much wattage which i don't have (I only have a 600W PSU)
2) AMD cards run hotter than nvidia

I'm more of an AMD fan but until they start reducing the power usage / heat production..I can't see myself using their high end cards

Seriously call yourself a amd fan and still spout the high wattage crap?
You can run 290/x on 500w, the claimed 750w minimum on the other 290/x(not sure on the Lightning edition) needs to be taken with a pinch of salt.

I've provided the simple to replicate power numbers. It's easy to do yourself. You do not have to be smart to see the power difference.

Go find the watt difference anywhere. Find the number of hours you play a day, let's just say 1 hour a day. Find out your kilowatt hour cost. Let's say 1 hour, 100 watt difference, and 17 pence per kWh.

365 (days) * 1 (hour) * .17 (price) * .1 (watts converted to kWatts). 6.205 per year per hour using these numbers. Dead simple to discuss.

We aren't talking rocket science here man, it's really simple math. You can keep badgering me with personal attacks or you can be reasonable and take the price comparison + energy difference for what it is, good critical analysis.

For me, if I bought a 290x at 239.99, I'd spend 25 quid a year extra on electricity. I'd keep the card for 2 to 3 years, so I could expect to pay 75 quid extra for the 290x.

You want to pretend these numbers are made up. I've shown you simple maths showing they are not.

Just turn the lights off when you game. And 17p a kw, where do you live?

Some people don't half talk rubbish the 970 is a better card, its not much more expensive if you shop around and Nivida have better software. Cuda ect
Dont get me wrong the 290x is a cracking card but it runs so hot, I have recently put one in a friends PC and its a power hungry beast caused all sorts of problems , crashing and power supply issues on a corsair 650 Watt power supply

£25 per year so even at your prices you are going to game every single day and for over 4 hours!

If an extra 7p per day is going to break the bank I'd cut down on my computer use if I was you.

Will this be DX12 compatible??

Mind late '15 for Windows 10 now.

great!! cheers!!

Yeah, AMD have said cards from 7xxx will be supported for DX12, we just don't know by how much. Microsoft also said themselves that any DX11 card is capable of DX12. We have to wait.

I see nat is upto his usual number spouting mode making it out to be maths facts, when all it is numbers pulled out of thin air.
I have to seriously laugh at the people trying to compare stock 970(which are the ones that are this sort of price) against one of(if not the best) 290x(4gb) pre-over clocked models(well seems there's a further oced model that's £300), pre-oced 970 that can be compared are £270+.

What's the specs of your pic and I'd be guessing the corsair psu is one of their recent ones which aren't as good as their older models which used to be seasonic oem.

lol this card needs a 750w power supply MINIMUM ! dont forget that.

people who know 970 gtx will match this card forget trolls who say it doesn't they do most 970s will oc and match 980gtxs aswell but still remain cool and use nearly half as much power ! also newer and will only get better with newer drivers .

look at the price the whole reason for dropping the price is they aren't competing with the 970s.

Well this card is made the serious overclockers thus the need for the higher than normal minimum wattage psu, but being a nvidia fanboy(shown by you avatar) you're not going to understand that, this card can be overclockers to 980 levels and higher if you have the know how/patience.
For the a average user would say go for other 290/x models.

what half of power you talking about? Mine oercloked pulls over 200W and if you mention drivers, then on first realese half of the games was unplayable due to fps dips and hungs during gameplay, and even after all these new drivers there is still serious framerate issues on 970 and also 980. And dont forget this anoying coil whine noise, which i had on my first two, but scan was very helpfull and offered a replacement straight away. After replacing my xfire 7950 only gain is temperature who sits at 67-72c during gameplay, but performance wise way behind. When using amd cards there was a lot of issues and xfire problems but some how i went throught them all, till I gave up and went to nvidia side, and gess what, its still the same boat just different lake! And dont get catched on all these paid reviews all over net
