Muse incorporates the operatic dynamics of bands like Queen, albeit without the whole camp factor. But unlike that four-piece, this group is also a bit of a modern day power trio, led by Matthew Bellamy (vocals, guitars), Christopher Wolstenholme (bass), and Dominic Howard (drums). Ironically, this is also a band with serious progressive leanings, yet it nevertheless has a strong alternative rock following. But due to the success of singles, such as 'Knights of Cydonia', Muse has staked a steady claim to consistent modern rock airplay. The Resistance, the group's fifth and latest effort, includes tracks such as 'United States of Eurasia', which showcases Matthew Bellamy's soaring vocals and classically-inspired piano skills. This standout track also layers vocals in a manner that brings to mind Queen's classic rock hit, 'Bohemian Rhapsody'. 'Exogenesis: Symphony' also reveals the act's ambitious streak, as it is broken into three parts: subtitled Overture, Cross Pollination, and Redemption, respectively. With The Resistance, Muse continues to grow into its evolving role as the next Yes. At a time where programs like American Idol promote image and performance over true instrumental innovation, Muse reminds us that talented musicianship is still alive and well. The Resistance is the sound of three great players making inventive music together. And when such collaboration is done well, as is most certainly accomplished here, the results are nearly impossible to resist.
