So would i, if it was actually available........!
For £10 more you could have the newer version HERE currently available in 3TB or 2TB.

Apart from the snazzy design, the main advantages are improved OS/firmware that allows you to shut down, and there are a number of apps you can install. The cheaper model doesn't allow you to add any apps.

From the features list:

Third-party applications to customize your way

Tailor your My Cloud Home device to fit your personal needs and preferences using downloadable services, including Plex Media Server™, Dropbox, Google Drive™, IFTTT and more.

Cloud account download to keep everything in one place

Store everything in one place, even content in your favorite cloud accounts. Photos, videos and files from your cloud accounts are automatically downloaded to your My Cloud Home device, including Dropbox, Box, Google Drive™, Facebook and many more.

Do you need to install apps onto a drive? If you set your default storage location in Dropboc, google etc to use that drive you won't need any other apps surely?

or have a missed a point?

There are lots of ways you can use DropBox, I suppose this way you could still use it if the main DropBox server went down. A MyCloud is a server in its own right, no need for your computer to be running either. To be honest, the Plex thing is the selling point here, and you may also be able to install the Transmission client too (my EX2100 can), which means you don't need to leave your computer on when uploading or downloading torrents.

So maybe the way to look at it, is that it is not an external hard drive, It is a streamlined PC/server with its own storage and its own OS and apps, which you (and others if you choose) can access via the browser interface (or the phone app) but will work independently of your PC.

I've have this drive for a few years and it is a bit cumbersome without being able to install apps such as plex, however it's been reliable and easy enough to set up and point devices to its directories.

is it fast over wifi?

is it fast over wifi?

By wifi it is not as fast as USB 3.0 to and from a PC by a long way, but I've found that attaching an external USB 3.0 HDD to the MyCloud USB port makes for very fast transfer.

I tried cloning a specific mounted MyCloud shared volume to a connected USB 3.0 HDD using CarbonCopyCloner mac app and this takes some time, I assume because the data is going via my mac.

The fastest way to transfer data to or from the MyCloud is to set up a simple backup task (select the Backup tab on the MyCloud browser interface) copying data on MyCloud to an attached USB 3.0 HDD, or vice versa. The whole transfer task is handled by the MyCloud and data only goes via the USB 3.0 cable. I haven't done tests to see if this is as fast as transferring USB3 --> PC/Mac but I'd guess it's about the same.

I think I might just get a normal drive and share it across my network between my mac and pc's

I should add that the MyClouds always have the WD Red drive inside which are more robust for network attached use, while the MyBook have the standard use WD Blue* inside, not specifically built for network use.

*there are occasional reports that Reds have been found inside.

So this is not a question it is a statement??

Seriously though, do you honestly not understand how this site works? No one single person can dictate to everyone what is a hot deal or not. Or if it is a deal at all.

Any offer where one person exchanges money (or something else) for something is a deal. Here is a dictionary definition:

deal - noun - an agreement entered into by two or more parties for their mutual benefit, especially in a business or political context: the government was ready to do a deal with the opposition.

On this site everything posted is a deal. The community of HUKD members decides. And the HUKD community decides HOW hot the deal is. So by all means say how hot you think the deal is, but be arrogant, don't try to tell everyone who has voted it up that it is not hot. Just vote and realise that you are not insignificant, but also not a dictator.

I was expecting a time machine comment by if only on my last credit card statement it stands to reason that it may be that price soon again and as this is way over that then may be worth waiting?

I don't think zillion is an actual number and if it were I don't think you would be able to count it,and what is more, I don't have and never had a glass house. So this policeman of irrelevant posts is ruling yours null and void.

It is not possible to count your points either, because there are none. Now post another really, really, really, really, really, really funny reply again because you are not predictable at all. Go on, you can't resist, can you?
