You can get a Dell T20 full Xeon server for not much more, am I missing something? This is just an empty 2 drive NAS no?

Yes, that is not suitable for everyone. But do post it as it maybe for someone.

Some people spend hundreds of pounds more on just an empty 2 drive NAS but still it all boils down to ones needs from a device. Not everyone has the time, space or knowhow to install and manage a server, don’t get me wrong the server you suggest will no doubt be a more powerful device but some prefer the simple things in life and for simple backup of media a two bay NAS at a budget price is money well spent.

Way more power hungry/loud, and harder to setup than this for the average user.

Different hardware for different applications.
This is out of stock!!

Yes, and only two disks spaces so not worth buying IMO, as others have said, buy a proper pc, faster, more storage space. Plenty of free software to use on it

There was only a couple left in stock unfortunately

I have been looking for a server to replace my NAS mainly to run virtual machines, where can I get this from?

Thanks.

Search for the Dell T20 Xeon deals on here, Dell do occasional cashback. I think the company is called serverworld or something similar.

A NAS is basically an underpowered, less configurable PC, a "One trick pony".

A bit like buying one of those mobiles for OAP's that cost about £80 when you can get a basic Smartphone for about £30.

Doesn't a Dell T20 full Xeon server count as a pc in your mind?
PS Don't tell me the difference physically or software-wise the difference, I know, thank you, I've had a few.
Essentially there is no difference

Yes, plus the hardware will make it slower. The main advantage is small size and disk access. You can more easily replace the disks. But how often do you need to do that anyway? Being a two disk machine, you're only going to have the best part of one (if raided) which isn't IMO a very useful size nowadays anyway.

Technically it is a pc if you like but generally the average joe wouldn’t buy a server for a pc. A 2 bay NAS has its use’s over a pc, I have a laptop and a PC but still find the need for a 2 bay NAS in mirror mode to keep all the family pictures on, which also backs up to Dropbox. I’m not trying to start a argument but I just find it odd for someone who has listed deals for various external hard drives and NAS like boxes to say buy a proper pc, a NAS isn’t meant to be a PC and surely you know this.

I post deals because they're cheaper. Sometimes I recommend them also. Hard drives: I want bigger and bigger hard drives! As it happens I have three microservers (four disks or more in each), two real servers and a few pcs. All have their uses. Some of my servers sometimes just run as workstations, with or without server software, why not?
Nowadays (as I said in a previous post) a two disk NAS isn't much use, I don't think. With the move to 4K and even larger and larger photo files.

I agree for your uses then yes this is not worthy of a purchase, I’ve had servers in the past including the little HP Gen8 which was a great low cost little 4 bay server, but for my needs now with less time to tweak settings I find the EX2 Ultra I bought a bit back good enough for the family photos and videos. I no longer bother with Plex servers and I wouldn’t recommend this for it either. I knew when I posted this deal it wouldn’t get the most heat with there only being a couple in stock at time of posting but hopefully a couple of members that have similar needs to mine have managed to pick up a cheap NAS. Anyway I appreciate the time you have taken to reply and for not throwing the toys out the pram like many do take care!
Has anyone received confirmation their item is out for delivery yet?

I agree ... take care!

I've just posted my first draft of an FAQ to go with WD recertified offers, after seeing the same questions and comments over and over again.

I just have.
Buy an old PC and stick NAS4FREE or FreeNas on it
