I use Amazon Glacier, it costs me about 20p a month to store 45gb of data. You only pay for what you use. If you just want a backup in case you lose your other copies it's great, even if your house burns down.
There is a good Windows client called FastGlacier.

Does anyone know if this are reliable for long time file storage?

I wouldn't rely on any hard drive for long term storage. Had several new drives fail on me. Always have multiple copies of valuable files. Just look at the amazon reviews and all manufacturers drives have lots of reports of failures.

Will it work with my acorn atom?

Ah, the grandad of the bbc micro... I have an acorn atom in my loft... I built it from a kit in 1981 (?). Kept for old times sake...... :-)
Cheers for this!
These are USb3 btw .. should just mention that ... copying stuff from a my passport and I'm getting approx 95Mb/s . As to these being refurbished, I expect they get them back and test them, and if they pass all the tests sell on..
How exactly would anything else be feasible at £27.99 ?

Would this be ok for a Wii U to install homebrew and games etc?

I wouldn’t recommend it, from my experience, you need a AC powered USB HDD or a USB stick to get things running properly, as the Wii U’s USB ports aren’t powerful enough.

No difference other than the plastic housing by the look of it
The link isnt working.
Based from experience, my last Passport lasted about 5 uses. I got a replacement but did not bother with it yet.

Hit and miss with drives these days, seems that there is a lottery on them too.

1 Passport Drive = 1 Complete Fail, could not retrieve my data.
6 WD Elements = 1 Bad Sector Errors after 5 days as in 120 hours. Managed to retrieve data, replaced.
2 Toshiba = 0 Failures so far.

I also use some of the bigger desk ones for backups of my backups:)) yep it got to that after losing my data.
By the way what's the warranty on them, can't seem to find it on the website. Someone mentioned 6 months? If that's the case, it will probably pack it in right after those 6 months:)

However bear in mind these have been checked or repaired, so the chance is that they may actually be better than new ones or same failure rate.

I would also imagine that my returned drive that has bad sectors would be in the same boat. A Recertified drive as it was only purchased 3 months ago and now is returned.

I would suggest to use the WD HD Diagnosis Tools for a quick and full test (warning this can take 10-15 hours for a 4TB drive). Might be worth using an application that monitors your HD and provides warnings.

You can. I use one of these on a WiiU. But you need to use a USB 3.0 micro Y cable eg:

ebay.co.uk/itm…rue

The WiiU has two rear USB ports. One can be used for power, one for data. Doesn't matter which you use for what. (You can use the front ones too for that matter, but it'll be fugly). Nintendo do recommend using an independently powered drive, but I've been using one of these no problem. The console even gives you an error code suggesting the use of a Y cable if it detects a drive fault.

You don't have to scroll all the way down, just need to add to basket if your choice is available in stock. If not, there will be no add to basket button. Add to basket button would be right next/below where it says 30 days money back guarantee.

The 4TB model is cheaper than the 3TB on Amazon right now if you're looking for it brand new. Only £25 more than this refurbished and comes with 3 year warranty as apposed to this ones 6 month.

Also use amazon smile if you do go for it as you donate to charity at no extra cost to you.

Went for the white as I could only see white and yellow at 2TB. Don't forget 10 percent Quidco!

I format disks to ext4
Go to control panel/ file station and you will see usb share underneath netbackup folder on the left hand side. Right click usb share and go to properties. There are a few tabs across the top. See if you can change permissions there. Might not work but worth a try

The reason for this is HDD is a mechanical part. It will wear out over time, especially hot or too humid environments or when HDD is moved/shaken when reading or writing data or dropped while powered off. It's not a question if the HDD will fail, it's a question of when. That is a very good advise - the most important data should be saved in more than one place.
I have two 4TB large external hard drives (3.5) and 1 x 2TB My Passport HD from WD, all refurbished, and they all have been like new and have been working fine for years.

Yep. My most treasured photos are on my laptop, on a NAS, in the cloud and a few copies burnt to DVD and given to relatives to keep. Probably got a usb stick with them on to

I look at it and think what would happen if I got, burgled.. or, got a virus.. or accidently deleted them or had hardware failure.

Bit paranoid but I'd be absolutely gutted if I lost them. Makes me shudder to think of storing them on one hard drive.
For info: Black 1TB units currently available at time of posting (6:30pm - Mon 14th Jan 2019) and the £5 discount code is still working.

2TB units also available in black, red and white.
