That's a good price for 256gb and usb 3.0!!
Received mine today but bought off ebay when 10% offer was on, the title stated 140mb/s (didnt state whether this was read or write) and I'm pleased to say that I'm getting around 250mb/s read and 160mb/s write which is amazing for this price. Also tested to see if it lived up to its true capacity and managed to fill the drive without error using h2testw. I know it may be a lottery with these things but definitely worth it for me!

You can see many details about this from recent postings.

I managed to get a fast one but some have reported receiving models that are more in line with the originally posted read and write of 25/25MB's.

But compared to other USB 3 flash drives, this offers the greatest value by a country mile.

Some have suggested that with the drop in prices of SSD's that they may well be an even better value direction and they will certainly be faster with an external housing but of course, not quite as portable and accessible.

All of these MyMemory sticks seem to be 25MB/s in reality now. Their Red Sticks used to be on here more often than WD re-certified drives. Not any more!

I've used Rd Sticks for years and got 45MB/s from old 128GB sticks. The last 128GB stick (2014-15) I bought though was after they swapped out the decent components for $h!+ ones. I returned it in protest at the 25MB/s and shortly afterwards I bought a 256GB stick from their eBay site with a voucher for £29.99 and was very pleased to get 45MB/s.

Fingers crossed there's some faster ones out there, but I'd wager 25MB/s is the bog stanadard.

I bought one only a few weeks ago and it was of the super fast variety.

That's a good price for 256gb and usb 3.0!!

I've never understood how they can claim USB3 when 20MB/s was achievable and not exceptional with USB2. Is it any different from getting a USB 1.0 64MB stick and saying its USB 3 because it is compatible with the USB3 socket?
Slow for 3.0 but considering 256GB, the price is great in my opinion, easier than carrying a HD with you. Very tempting, don't need it, better go to bed before changing my mind:). Hot!!!

Not all USB 2 sticks are the same either and I've bought plenty that were way under the supposed speeds.

These are the kind of speeds that I was getting.

I received mine from the deal last week for £25 and I am honestly amazed at the speed. I mean don't get me wrong, it's not the best all rounder, but still very decent speeds:

You are right, I have not seen the details of this USB Flash Drive. It's slow indeed for a USB 3.0. It's like a good USB 2.0 Flash Drive to be honest. Now I get it why is cheap.

Thats megabit a second?

It's actually in megabytes. It also completed the H2wtest in 24 minutes for write (averaged about 163MB/s) and about 20 minutes for read. Obviously these are only benchmarks and I'm sure in everyday use it won't be quite as quick, but I'm still very impressed.

I have the 128GB of this, it gets very hot when copying large files.
I tried to copy a directory with lots of files [total size ~80GB], it got really HOT at about 20GB then the light keeps flashing without any files being copied. I think it just hangs! I then format it completely, tried again ... the same thing happened.

But it's ok for light copy.

I am not sure if I got the same drive from others but I did email them to enquiry and they replied this is what it should be. Althought i think it is not possible with this chip and nand.

It's so strange how there can be such a massive variation in speeds from the same stick.

Drivers can make quite a difference but not between the figures being experienced.

Agreed. But what I find interesting is that in our screenshot the stick is 236GB whereas in thsou’s screenshot it is 230GB. I’m guessing they rebranded 2 different sticks. I might check with chip genius to see the differences with thsou’s screenshot info.

Yep, my one seems in line with your screenshot:

And they're both slightly different to thsou's screenshot regarding the part number and F/W. I was sort of expecting a completely different brand to be honest...
There seems to be a number of Phison firmware updates available,so maybe a brave soul with a slow drive might want to flash and see if it has any effect.

At £25.50, it's as good enough alternative comparative price all in. :-D

May prove hard to navigate that one a wee bit perhaps?.

Is there possibly an English equivalent of whatever that above link of yours was?. :-)

Best to start here because it seems that all the tools and firmware are there, somewhere.

But it looks a bit of a minefield to navigate, so best to ask in the forum for the specific one because even when finding a link to firmware for what seems like this specific drive, there were many variations with no real indication of what the right one is.

You will need to turn on translate in your browser as it's a Rissian site but they do seem eager to point in the right direction.

I'm no expert but there are some differences between the PS2251 IC variants that it would seem these drives have

phison.com/en/…_en
phison.com/en/…_en

The firmware files for PS2251-07 linked to from the page show a max of 2016 whereas the screenshots above show the currrent drives with 2017 firmware. So this doesn't look great.

So 2 questions. Does an updated firmware exist and can it make the drive faster or are we simply hardware limited by the slightly different drive design? I suspect the latter.

I could not see anything in the specs that seems to define any difference.

Whilst perusing myself I did find firmwares from 2017 but was unable to determine exactly which one would be specific to this controller and Toshiba nand.

The people running the Russian forum seem to be clued up and happy to point people in the right direction, so best to start there I think.

I tried to search firmwares of this chip in Chinese sites but firmware version doesn't match. They are 1.xx.xx and older than 2017 so I decide not to modify it. It looks like the disk from MyMemory has its special firmware.
Arrived today, wish I never bothered... painful . Took over 15 mins to transfer a single 2GB file @ approx 1-2MB/s. Pretty sure this is worse than USB 2.0 days!
Will never buy another Mymemory brand stick. Just received my USB3 128gb one. Absolutely terrible speeds. Copying a file it runs between 2 - 8mbps. And this is USB3, my old Lexar on a USB2 port manages 17mbps.
Customer service say I cannot exchange it unless I want the same brand, yeah right. Definitely avoid.
Just for information.
MyMemory 128gb USB3 £24.99 Writing to drive, between 2 and 8mbps.
Corsair 64gb USB3 £19.99 Writing the same file, between 140 and 160mbps.
The MyMemory 64gb drive is £17.99 which is two pounds cheaper than the Corsair, but Corsair writes 20 times faster.

Which model of Corsair, because in the dozens of speed tests that I have seen for their drives around this price mark, none come near the write speed you quote?

As for the 128Gb writing so slow, I would get a replacement as I have 4 of them and they are all consistent with read and write at around 25MB/s.
Edited by: "reddit" 17th Aug
Corsair Flash Voyager 64gb. Copied 30gb to MyMemory drive took over an hour, copied the same 30gb to the Corsair took less than 4 minutes. The Corsair was writing around 160mbps the MyMemory around 8mbps.
