Cheaper than many places on the web, but these are fun gifts only. Nobody except you will ever refer to it with the name you give it.

Some people get a bit of a bee in their bonnet about this, see an article about it ]in wired magazine. Basically, the star names are shoved in a database which isn't refered to by anyone...

Not voted, just informing people about another option

Not voted either because it's a personal choice to buy or not. May as well name a tree in the Amazon or an Elephant in the desert.

Looking up on a clear night and making up your own names for the constellations is much cheaper, and you aren't restricted to one star that lives in a drawer

reduced to £4.99 in my local currys store (Southampton)

Sure, these star names may not be officially recongised. but this gift is mostly about the thought and the presentation.
it's more of a better gift than simply pointing a star out to someone and giving it a name. plus it improves peoples knowledge on space

There is not that much thought put into it. You get a random star number and it is assigned the name you choose. Yes, it is nice presentation case, but the contents are essentially meaningless. It is no real different to buying them a Lord / Lady title of nowhere in particular. It just boils down to a certificate to say someone was mug enough to pay for a meaningless piece of paper in a nice case with a book. If you want to improve knowledge of space / stars / constellations, you can get a decent book / star chart cheaper than this. Or maybe pay for the travel to an observatory / museum ...

I can see that you are quite single minded, your chosen name gets stored, who cares if its the OFFICIAL STAR NAME COMPANY or whatever.
so you think giving a named star to someone you care about is just meaningless? please open your mind. the chances are the recipient will not know if its going to be officially recognised or not. the thought that i mention about, is not the thought that the company that produces these items put's into their product, the thought is concerning about the giver, it's quite a caring/romantic gesture in my mind and will surely put a lot of smiles on peoples faces.

I see. So the receiver may think they are getting something unique and known to the astronomical world as , when really they are just getting a piece of paper. Let's hope they do not get into the hobby, do a bit of research and realise that the person that bought the gift for them was duped into buying a piece of paper for £14.
