This card’s a decent all-rounder but before you read on, be aware that you need a Nationwide current account (FlexAccount, FlexOne, FlexStudent, FlexDirect or FlexPlus account) to be eligible.

If you have a Nationwide current account, this is what the Select credit card offers:

  • 0% on balance transfers for 12 months, no BT fee if you make the transfer in 3 months of getting the card
  • 0% on purchases for 12 months
  • Fee-free abroad
  • Cashback offers with Simply Rewards
  • APR 15.9%

Why I like this card

As I said this card’s a good all-rounder – a fee-free balance transfer is always good, even if it’s only 0% for 12 months.

It’s also one of the few cards that doesn’t cost extra to use abroad (unless you withdraw cash, so just use it for card transactions).

It’s worth registering for Simply Rewards too although I wouldn’t let the cashback offers influence your shopping decisions too much.

I have same card.. I don't know how but about 70% of online purchases gets decline and require you to call or reply to their text messeges.

It's personal experience so it might be different for someone else!

It works without problem in-store.

I've had this card for a few years now and haven't had any issues shopping online or instore with it.

I've even used it on trips to South East Asia and it's never been a problem for me.

I've had this card for years and the only time I got a texts to confirm purchases was when we went to USA before Christmas.
I would ring them up to report this issue if I were you.

As far as I know it used to be if you were going abroad or going to make an unusually expensive purchase that you could ring them in advance so you would have no issue but now they say you don't have to let them know(since some time last year)and I think them texting you to confirm purchases is the new way it's done. I much prefer them old way.

I have called them every time. It declines even if in the past I have used company successfully.

I was told that it's automatic.

As i said it's personal experience... I got this card for 3+ years..... I am looking for another one.
isn't 12 months too low when there are other cards offering over 24 months....
Lloyds or post office card- 24 months/ no fees foreign transactions
They have been hoping I'll swap my Nationwide gold credit card to this one. The gold card product was discontinued in 2012, but still they keep providing the card.
i have this card and have had the same problem as many others have reported, i tried to pay for a rental car over the phone and it was declined so ended up having to use another credit card. a couple of minutes later i received a text asking if i had tried making a transaction by which time it was way to late.
Also have this card but never knew it was fee free abroad! Been using my Halifax Clarity card for that. At least i have a choice of the 2 now. Never had a problem with this card either i might add.
Same issue that the verify by visa seems to stop everything when using over internet meaning having to phone in. I think it has something to do with nationwide having no password option available yet other visa cards you have from other suppliets requiring them to be used. Looks like visa profile all your cards against a single profile, so maybe a coding error somewhere causes this. Nationwide have no idea why but it's infuriating.
