Having never owned a Sat Nav before my daughter wants a reasonable priced one for 'gadding about'. She looked at this discounted Argos one but her friends say that she wants a Sat Nav with an SD Card slot for updating data and a Sat Nav that can give out 'lane gudance' as well....any ideas what to go for at this kind of price?

Your link didn't work try this

"Please note item 5042496 has previously been on sale at £69.99" - only really saving £5 then not £115!

This has an SD Card slot and active lane assistance as per the review so seems perfect for her needs, and a high priced sat nav for a budget price, if your local store has one I would snap it up.

The link you provided was for the Navigon 40 Premium - Argos are allegedly selling the Essential (cheaper) model, but according to MSE, they are actually giving customers the Easy model (even cheaper!). See forums.moneysavingexpert.com/sho…332

Thanks for that, I did a quick Google search and found Halfords is the next best price at £85.00 so the Argos price seems very good. Also checked out specs on other site's and like you say it does have an SD Card slot and active lane assistance. The Safety/Speed camera warning I am having difficulty in finding out if this is also built in...anybody know or can confirm if it does?
I have reserved one anyway for my daughter... now to get the money off her is a different story!..LOL....

im confused, lol. this 1 says 'with uk', theres 1 in halfords, is the same, but says uk, roi and europe, £84.99 is it worth paying the extra if u want the extra countries?? or is there a price for the service,

Reading that link has left me puzzled. The one I've reserved is the Essential, but it looks like Argos have been selling the Easy in place of it, I think!

The Essential is a more expensive and better model than the Easy according to reviewers but on the Navigon website I can't find any details on the Essential only the Easy. Will have to research more.

aaahhhhhhhhh, y do they give us soo many decisions. the 1 i was looking at is essential traffic, so seems as though speed camera etc are included and 23 + countries, but then we dont need warning of speed cameras DO WE??? lol. im shutting down all my windows and not getting 1 at all now !!! ive got a headache !!

Have reserved one myself, not sure at the moment though. I have a tomtom 3.5 screen so this is bigger, lane guidance would be useful but i would like Europe maps

Thanks for that hot tip!. This Sat Nav lark is driving me bonkers!. Looking around and trying to get more information about the Argos Essential model on Amazon it says in the description for the Essential model "Please note you may receive the Navigon Easy Sat Nav, this is of a high specification but slightly cosmetically different" Talk about confusing what is the model of this Sat Nav, the Essential or the Easy!

Even more confusing, if the Easy doesn't come with european maps, why the heck does the Argos customer reviews state so, one person mentions going to Disney Paris with it? Also PC World have the Easy model and it states it has Western European Maps, they also have a "plus" model (presumably the Essentials model) which states europe maps...so in theory the easy version should come with UK, Ireland and Western Europe maps, and the essentials come with UK, Ireland and full European maps.

Yup, all very confusing. I'm picking up my one tommorrow and will let you all know. My attitude being that although £65 is good for a sat nav, I will still ensure they don't give me an EASY model.

I've reserved one at Halfords as well in hope they will price match Argos, but I'm thinking that Halfords will turn around and say theirs includes Europe mapping were as the Argos one doesn't and thats why the Halfords one is £20 dearer.....but I will try my charm, wit and ex-salesman skills in persuading them to price match Argos! Otherwise I will also check to make sure Argos dont give me the Easy model.

Apparently these are the barcodes for the two models if anyone is buying one from Argos
Navigon 40 Essential EAN/Barcode: 4020907014135
Navigon 40 Easy EAN/Barcode:4020907013275

Even if it is the Easy variant, it still seems a pretty good deal. I've reserved at Halfords and my local argos were out of stock so hopefully they'll cut a deal to match a reservation at Argos further away.

Lane guidance and traffic re-routing on both which is what I'd like in a sat nav so I think I'd be happy with either. Unless I'm missing something feature wise.

Just picked one up at Argos Peterborough and it is the essential and has maps for the UK and 22 other European countries.

Thanks

Thanks for the 'live' update that it is the Essential model and not the Easy, any chance of submitting the Barcode number so I can verify at the Argos counter tomorrow?

After reading through this post for extra info, I went and picked one up from Argos Coventry, £64.99 catalogue No 5042496. It is a Navigon 40 Essential Europe 23. Bar code No 4020907014135. On the label on bottom of the sat nav it states 40 easy, but when registering it at Navigon they recognise it as a 40 Essential. If your going to Argos check the bar code. Hope the info helps

If it registers with Navigon as the 40 Essential and yet is an Easy, does it come preloaded with 23 or 43 countries?! If it only comes with 23, does the registration allow you the download of the other 20?

The Halfords Navigon Essential has 23 countries as well, not 40 as suggested by cicobuff. Is their a site where it says the Essential
comes with 40 countries?

Strange isn't it, halfords has the essential listed as only 23 countries, and yet the initial argument with the person over at MSE stating the essential comes with 43 countries

So this begs the question, is the person over at MSE wrong in thinking the essential should come with 43 countries then, and if so, what the heck is the difference between the easy and the essential if the number of countries are the same?!

The "plus" edition sold by PC World has 43 countries for sure.

Ok (I think!) I may have cracked all this confusion :

I think the SKUs have changed for the range of models and have been structurely simplified:

.The existing Easy came with UK and ROI Maps
.The Essentials came with UK and 22 other Western European countries as standard.
.The Premium came with UK and 42 other European countries, bluetooth, 3D Landmarks

So the guy on MSE spouting that he was ripped off by Argos was wrong unless he received an Easy pack (with UK and ROI Maps) instead of the Essentials pack which does only contain 23 country maps, he should never have expected 43 countries with the Essentials Model!

Navigon have streamlined (at least according to their website) and replaced the Easy (UK and ROI) with the Easy EU 23 Model (same as existing Essentials with 23 maps)

So Halfords Easy model is the one with just the UK/ROI whereas the Easy listed on PC Worlds website would be the newer Easy EU 23 Model.

The existing Essentials model therefore would have been deleted from the range and instead the "Plus" model replaces it creating 3 new SKUs I guess (this seems to be the logic according to Currys website too) :

. Easy 23 EU Model - UK and 22 Western European Countries
. Plus Model - UK and 42 European Countries
. Premium - UK and 42 Countries, Bluetooth, 3D landmarks on maps.

So I presume this may be the sell off of the "Essentials" due to the streamlining of the range, whereas before the only way you got all 43 maps by buying the premium model, they have moved that to the mid tier instead moving the 23 maps to the lowest device in the range, with the premium difference being in the connectivity and graphical extras.

So on face value...is it still a bargain? I would say yes considering the replacement to the Essentials now being the base model the "Easy 23 EU" retails at £110 plus.

Ok some clarification needed

The Essential Europe 23 from Argos Bar code 4020907014135 has 23 maps of europe including the UK.

Navigon recognises it as an 'Essential' ES40_23

There is a new map update download available Q3/2010 (mine was free) but it only gives you 23 countries not 43, however you can purchase 44 maps of Europe + Turkey for £55.

There is only one female voice giving direction, 6 other funny English voices are available to download cost £19.95. No software update is available.

It by no means is the best Sat Nav on the market for gadgets and gizmo's, would have liked to be able to change screenshot background colours, but it is well made, the windscreen mount is very sturdy and well designed for ease of use and looks.

A brand new Sat Nav with 23 European maps for £65 - I'm happy

I'm out shopping today, I have reserved one at Halfords and one at Argos. I will call at Halfords first and see if they will price match Argos because Halfords is easy parking outside. Reading all comments the Halfords and Argos Essentials must be the same spec.....but I think Navigon has not been a 100% level with the descriptions and labeling of the Essential reading through customer reviews and comments on this HUKD deal.

Navigon have been, they have just as I said changed the SKUs across the range now, meaning that some stores like Argos and Halfords have the old range of models whereby Dixons retail group obviously have, hence why places like Halfords and Argos are having these sell offs.

Basically the Easy 23 EU is the new Essentials, they have just moved the maps tier through their range meaning the base model now has Western European maps, the mid range model (the plus replacement of the Essentials) has all European maps and the top range premium maintains all the European maps as well as "premium" features of bluetooth and 3D landscapes.

It clearly makes better marketing sense across the range for Navigon to tier like this.

I have a tomtom, v2 would this be as good any better. I have one reserved but have always used tomtom and dont want a lesser unit. My tomtom has no lane guidence and is only 3.5 screen

All, have pickd up my Navigon Essential from Argos this morning and as you've gathered it is definitely the Essential model with European maps. For 65 notes I'm happy. Had it's first outing and although the tide is coming in and I need to get the AA to tow me from the beach ...think its working

Halfords did a price match for me to a Argos reservation. The manager couldn't get online to see the full spec from argos so I think I was very lucky. I have't had much time to really look at it and test it out. Seems okay for the short trip home from the shop. The post code search didn't seem intuitive. In the 1 minute of playing with it before setting off I ended up just entering city and street, which was easy peasy. Maybe reading the manual would help or not doing it while driving.

Picked mine up from Argos after spending 40 minutes in Halfords, first they said yes they would price match Argos but then they made an issue of the Argos one not having european maps, unfortunately they could get on the Argos website, I tried my best to convince him that it did but to no avail, so 'au-revoir' Halfords hello Argos.

Still in box awaiting opening...fingers crossed everything is okay!

From 'New Destination' page select options - settings - navigation, you can choose to have static or dynamic lane assistance, you can also choose advise of safety cameras (this does work, voice warns you to watch your speed and a speed limit sign comes up on screen, it also warns of traffic light cameras)

If you go options - settings - current route profile - car, you can choose consider traffic information

As the Tomtom said to Hans just after being accused of smelling really bad on the outside....."it depends on the Tomtom" (or maybe that was a Taum Taum). Does the Sainsburys TomTom include Europe maps ? I've got the Navigon 40 Essential pack and it includes everything you need for a tour of 23 countries including camera warnings, lane assistance, toothbrush etc etc. Nice widescreen unit and nice windscreen holder.

I got it yeah!!!! despite all of the crap halford tried to sell me, while i was price comparing

Anyone recommend a nice case for this baby
