When you say filters do you mean the white and orange ones that come with it? That's what I was using. What distance are you putting it from your subject please?

Thank you ever so much, just purchased the 18" too, I'll compare once they've arrived.

Thanks, had mine about that close, the missus refused to have some test shots as it was so bright and the lowest setting didn't really seem to be enough. Think I need more testing.

Are you using any other lights BTW?

Think because the weather has been so bad it's always really dark at the mo which is why I bought this as wanted to photograph our new baby. Maybe I need extra lighting, just didn't want my camera iso to be at the 1600 that was needed to take a decent pic (that was at F2.8)
Didn't really want to dig out the flash as don't want to damage her little eyes.

Any tips or advice welcomed
Blimey. Bought the 18" one just the other day. Havent opened it but i think I'll send it back and keep this space saving smaller one. Thank you.
Bought for my daughter's budding Youtube career.....
Thanks very much, my daughter has been after something like this. Heat added

a f/1.8 lens will give you another 1 1/3 stops of light over the 2.8, so a nifty fifty (50mm f/1.8) will perform better in lower light

Exactly this, plus keep it wide open for some sweet sweet bokeh

I do have a nifty fifty but thought my new lens, a sigma 17-50 would be better... And wanted to test it out. I've found the nifty to be less sharp at 1.8 so tend to start at 2.8
I'll give it a go and cheers for the replies, maybe I was over ambitious with my goals.

Alternatively, some cheap continuous video lights (i.e. the £30 CFL ones on ebay with softbox) should give the extra light without the 'shock' of a bright flash. Or go A-team and rig something up with existing lamps (or ring lights) and hung bedsheets to shoot through or bounce off to give big, soft lighting, which should allow the f/2.8 aperture to work well without going too high with the ISO, especially if the Sigma is Optically Stabilised, in which case you can drop the shutter speed right down to 1/50th of a second or lower and still get a sharp, handheld image.
