Amazon currently have the Nest Cam for £139.50. Most other retailers (John Lewis, Currys etc.) are selling this for £159.

I missed that! I've never seen it that cheap before even when on sale.
I love the nestcam. it just works so well.

I am thinking about ditching the CCTV for outdoor nestcams and just paying the yearly subscription for peace of mind.

Yes it's more expensive than alternatives. I don't care.
Do you need a subscription to use this?

You get 3 hour summaries free I believe, or can pay for 10 or 30 days cloud recording.

Yes
I'm thinking of ditching the nest cam for that reason
without nest aware at 8 quid a month (or 80 a year) you don't get any alerts / people tracking
wtf is the point without it? There are cheaper IP cameras with no cloud backup - and that's what nest cam is without the subscription...

I agree. But nevertheless if you do pay for that service, as intended by the camera creators, then this is a good product.

Previous comment was kind of like saying the TV remote is rubbish if you don't buy batteries...

Which again, if you knew up front that this was how the product was designed, would not make it valid to say the TV remote is pointless. You would be more than welcome to say TV remote + subscription is bad value, but to buy half of the requirement them complain its useless is a bit silly.

Except they don't advertise that the features you bought the camera for will be taken away after 30 days

Nest bought dropcam, and they're the exact same now as they were then... Except you didn't have to pay a ridiculous subscription fee that nest introduced

Literally the first thing it says in the description:

"Subscribe to Nest Aware and you can use the cloud to see more and do more with Nest Cam. Each Nest Cam automatically comes with a free 30-day trial. You can opt out at any time. When your trial expires, you can subscribe in the Nest app."

Can't comment in dropcam as I don't know anything about it, but I agree this would be a lot better with a subscription fee. The subscription has put me off buying this as well.
